Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo is expanding into live-action films with The Legend of Zelda. While many expected another animated movie, Nintendo has chosen to bring Hyrule to life with real actors, giving us our first glimpse of Link and Zelda in action. This new approach will test whether Nintendo’s beloved game franchises can also succeed as live-action adventures.
Filming for the live-action Legend of Zelda movie has begun, and fans are already getting sneak peeks online. Nintendo has now officially shared the first images of Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link through the Nintendo Today app. Just days into production, the movie is starting to come to life – you can see the first look images below!
What to Know for Live-Action Legend of Zelda Movie

The live-action Legend of Zelda movie is currently planned to hit theaters on May 7, 2027, which is shaping up to be a busy year for blockbuster releases. Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto will produce the film alongside Avi Arad, known for his work on movies like Venom and Uncharted. It’s a collaboration between Nintendo and Columbia Pictures, with a screenplay by Derek Connolly, who wrote the Jurassic World trilogy. The movie will be directed by Wes Ball, the director of the recent Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth have been confirmed as the first cast members for the live-action The Legend of Zelda film. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the game series, shared his excitement earlier this year, announcing that Bragason will play Zelda and Ainsworth will play Link, and expressing his anticipation to see them on screen. It’s currently unclear which specific Zelda game or story will inspire the film’s look and feel.
What Will The Legend of Zelda Movie Be About?

The initial glimpse of Link and Zelda in live-action shows designs that feel both familiar and fresh. Link’s dark green outfit is reminiscent of games like Twilight Princess, while Zelda’s blue dress echoes her appearance in Breath of the Wild. Similar to how the games often explore new storylines, it seems this live-action adaptation will tell its own unique story, separate from the events of the video games.
Although some Legend of Zelda games share story elements, each one tells a complete, standalone story with different versions of Link and Zelda. This approach is ideal for a new movie aiming to introduce these characters to a broader audience, and we’ll see how it works out when the film is released in 2027.
