Toonami has been a major part of Cartoon Network for years, and it’s how many people in North America first discovered anime. Shows like Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon became popular in the West largely thanks to Toonami. Although it’s now part of Adult Swim and airs late at night instead of in the afternoons, the block still continues. And now, one of the strangest anime series that became a Toonami staple is getting a live-action adaptation this summer, and a new trailer has just been released.
Even though a live-action movie or TV show like Alita: Battle Angel or One Piece isn’t in the works, the classic Toonami series Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is getting a live-action stage play in Japan. The play starts today, June 12th, 2026, and new photos reveal just how strange and unique it is. Unfortunately, the performances won’t last long – they end on June 21st. If you’re in or visiting Japan, you’ll have a limited time to see it at the Theater G Rosso in Tokyo. Check out the new photos below!

Bobobo-bo Returns

With the recent release of the live-action adaptation, Sho Kato, the original voice actor for the main character, shared his reactions. He admitted it’s easy to be confused by it, but surprisingly, he enjoys it, both from his time playing the role and as a viewer. He enthusiastically announced the start of “Super Hajike Stage ☆ Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo ~Fated! Nose Hair! Showdown!” and believes Bobobo’s energy is exactly what we need right now. He anticipates the show will evoke a range of emotions, making some people laugh and others cry. A unique aspect of the stage show is its unpredictability – each performance includes unexpected moments that feel spontaneous, adding to the fun.
Originally appearing in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2001, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo was adapted into an anime series by Toei Animation a few years later. The anime ran for seventy-three episodes, and although the original run ended without confirmation of more to come, there’s still plenty of source material left. A sequel series, Shinsetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, aired from 2005 to 2007 shortly after the first anime finished, leaving fans hopeful for a possible revival someday.
