The creator of the popular series Chainsaw Man is bringing Look Back back to cinemas with a new live-action film, and GKIDS has just released the first trailer. Tatsuki Fujimoto gained significant recognition recently, and while taking a break from Chainsaw Man, he created several short stories that became very popular. Look Back was one of these successful stories, and it’s now being adapted into what many consider the best anime film of 2024.
Originally a short story released while Chainsaw Man was being published, Look Back gained a lot of attention with a critically acclaimed animated film. Now, the story is being adapted into a live-action movie that will be released globally this year. GKIDS has just released the first trailer, giving fans a sneak peek at what to expect.
What to Know for Live-Action Look Back Movie
The animated film Look Back is coming to theaters in Japan later this year, and GKIDS will be releasing it in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland shortly after. While an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet, the main actors have been confirmed: Deguchi Natsuki and Furi Nanase will play the older and younger versions of Fujino, respectively, while Makita Aju and Okada Rokka will portray the older and younger Kyomoto.
The highly acclaimed filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, known for films like Shoplifters, is directing a new adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga, Look Back. Produced by Daiju Koide and K2 Pictures (who will distribute the film in Japan), this version of the story will offer a fresh perspective, distinct from the existing manga and anime adaptations. The creators hope this new take will allow even more people to experience the impactful original story.
Why Is Look Back Getting a Live-Action Movie?

When producer Daiju Koide asked me to consider a live-action film based on Look Back, I was thrilled to meet its creator, Mr. Fujimoto,” explained Hirokazu Kore-eda when the project was announced. “My first instinct was to simply thank him for creating such a wonderful story and for me having the good fortune to discover it. But the more I thought about it, the more I knew I had to bring it to life as a film.”
The director recalled making a firm decision on the drive home: they had to see this project through. Though filming is complete and the movie is still being edited, they’re confident it will be a powerful and meaningful work. The story is based on Fujimoto’s original short about two young girls dreaming of becoming manga artists, each taking a unique path in life. With both the manga and anime versions already popular, this new adaptation will introduce the story to an even wider audience.
