Lord of the Rings Fans Need to Play These 5 Fantasy Games (And 1 Is Completely Free to Play)

Over the years, there have been some excellent official Lord of the Rings games. However, more recent titles officially set in Middle-earth, such as Return to Moria and Tales of the Shire, haven’t been consistently well-received. While replaying the older, beloved games is always an option, sometimes you crave a fresh fantasy experience that captures the feeling of LOTR. Fortunately, official games aren’t the only way for Lord of the Rings fans to enjoy a great gaming experience.

So, what qualities define a fantasy game that will appeal to fans of Lord of the Rings? Great question! I’m focusing on games that boast rich, immersive fantasy worlds that truly feel lived-in. We also want games with memorable supporting characters and storylines that are nearly as grand as Frodo’s quest to destroy the One Ring. Not every game on this list includes characters from the Fellowship, but each one offers something that Lord of the Rings fans will appreciate as their next favorite game.

5. Elder Scrolls Online

Recently, I checked out Elder Scrolls Online to see if this older MMORPG is still enjoyable. It seems that even after more than 10 years, this fantasy game still has a lot going for it. You can explore the world of Tamriel and encounter interesting characters, and you also have the chance to team up with friends and create your own in-game group, like a virtual Fellowship.

Even though many of us are still waiting for Elder Scrolls 6, this online game features some of the most recent content Bethesda has created within the world of Tamriel in a long time. Therefore, it’s an excellent choice for fans of LOTR who want a game with ongoing updates and activities. Similar to LOTR, the game involves a lot of exploration and traveling across its expansive world.

4. Pillars of Eternity

If you’re looking for a fantasy game where your decisions really matter, Pillars of Eternity is a great choice. It features team-based battles that will remind you of adventures like The Lord of the Rings, all set in a detailed and exciting fantasy world. You can create your own unique character, choosing from classic races like Dwarves and Elves. Then, you’ll be able to explore a world filled with interesting people and secrets.

A big draw for fans of The Lord of the Rings will be the game’s diverse group of companions. Players can gather a team from 11 unique characters. If you’re looking to create your own fantasy group for an epic journey, Pillars of Eternity is a great choice.

3. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

If you’re like me and always looking for that next big fantasy RPG to get lost in – something that really hits that Lord of the Rings sweet spot – you absolutely need to check out Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. It’s a party-based game that takes all the awesome world-building and rules from the Pathfinder tabletop RPG and turns it into a really captivating story. Just like Tolkien’s books, this game makes you think about what’s truly good and evil, all while letting you explore a huge, beautiful fantasy world. It’s seriously addictive!

I’m really getting into Wrath of the Righteous. What I love most is that my choices actually matter, letting me create my own unique fantasy story. Plus, there are a ton of interesting characters I can recruit to my Fellowship as we try to stop the evil forces pouring out of the Abyss. The game is awesome because it lets me really customize my hero – there are so many classes and races to pick from, it’s perfect for building the character I want to play. It really feels like my own heroic journey!

2. Baldur’s Gate 3

It’s hardly necessary to recommend Baldur’s Gate 3 at this point. Its excellent reputation for great storytelling, interesting characters you travel with, and overall enjoyable gameplay is well-known. Though officially a Dungeons & Dragons game, it also has a lot to offer fans of Lord of the Rings, too.

Baldur’s Gate 3 completely immerses you in its rich fantasy setting, boasting beautifully crafted and detailed environments. You create a group of characters, each with their own story, who are unexpectedly united to overcome a threat that proves to be far more significant than initially believed. Plus, the game offers extensive character customization and a wide range of romantic possibilities to enhance the experience.

1. Lord of The Rings Online

If you absolutely must journey to Middle-earth, The Lord of the Rings Online is your ticket. You can play it for free initially, with optional paid expansions available later. This free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is set in Tolkien’s beloved fantasy world, allowing you to visit iconic locations like the Prancing Pony and Lothlorien, and many more. You’ll have the chance to design a unique character deeply rooted in Middle-earth’s history, choosing from a variety of classes and races.

This game is an MMORPG where you can team up with friends in a Fellowship. However, it’s also enjoyable to play by yourself. You can choose to be a hero or even side with Sauron and fight against the forces of good. Best of all, there’s no monthly fee and it’s free to download, making it a great option for Lord of the Rings fans who want to revisit Middle-earth and immerse themselves in that world.
