The Lord of the Rings films remain a landmark achievement in 21st-century cinema, and the story is set to expand. A new movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is planned for release in 2027, and will be directed by Andy Serkis, who famously played Gollum in the original trilogy. Sir Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, and there’s speculation that other beloved characters and actors from Lord of the Rings might also return.
If a new story focusing on Gollum and Gandalf is made, the Hobbits seem like the most likely characters to appear alongside them. Gandalf often spends time with the Hobbits, and the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum, could easily include some familiar faces from the Shire. There’s been talk for a while about a major Hobbit character potentially being involved, and now some of the actors who played Hobbits in The Lord of the Rings are discussing whether they’d be interested in reprising their roles and what projects they’re considering.
Lord of the Rings‘ Hobbit Actors Discuss Their Future in the Franchise

Recently, Empire Magazine reunited several stars from The Lord of the Rings trilogy for an interview. Those who participated included Ian McKellen, along with actors who played the Hobbits: Dominic Monaghan (Merry Brandybuck), Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Billy Boyd (Pippin Took), and Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee).
Elijah Wood agreed with Ian McKellen’s comment that filming The Lord of the Rings in New Zealand felt more like a relaxing break than work. “Like Ian, I’d love to return to New Zealand,” Wood said. “I miss the people and would enjoy revisiting that experience and seeing old friends.” While he hasn’t confirmed anything, Wood has suggested he’s been discussing potential future projects, including Hunt for Gollum.
Boyd eagerly responded, telling McKellen, “We’d be happy to come if you’d like, Ian!” Sean Astin playfully chimed in, “Sam would be glad to carry your bag for you.”
The actors expressed interest in working together again on a future Lord of the Rings project, potentially following their work on The Hunt for Gollum. A likely possibility is adapting “The Scouring of The Shire,” the next-to-last chapter in J.R.R. Tolkien’s story. This chapter focuses on the Hobbits’ return home after destroying the One Ring, only to discover that The Shire has fallen under the control of villains. Sean Astin enthusiastically shared his desire to see this chapter brought to the screen, saying, “I’d like that very much. I think that would be cool!”
Warner Bros. is clearly planning to expand the world of The Lord of the Rings beyond the original trilogy and The Hobbit prequels. While the franchise also exists as the The Rings of Power series on Amazon-MGM, and standalone films haven’t always worked for similar franchises like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings has a unique advantage. The original stars are still available to reprise their roles, creating a strong connection for fans. Millions would likely enjoy seeing these beloved actors embark on a few more adventures together before it’s no longer possible, as Ian McKellen has hinted.
