Until now, CI Games and Hexworks hadn’t fully revealed the Umbral, a key part of Lords of the Fallen 2. A new gameplay trailer has just been released, finally showing off this massive and disturbing land of the dead. Like the first game, players can expect to encounter plenty of terrifying new creatures.
So, what’s different? According to Ryan Hill, the chief creative officer, the project has undergone a dramatic transformation – almost like something rising from the dead. He described the old, rough exterior being completely removed, exposing a fresh, energetic core – a kind of powerful, new beginning.
Fortunately, game director James Lowe shared more details in the latest Developer Update video, called “Lifting the Veil.” He explained that the new content is significantly larger and improved, and that it’s becoming harder to tell the difference between the game’s two worlds, Axiom and the new realm, as they increasingly overlap.
The developers know players weren’t thrilled with the first version of the Umbral realm. To encourage more thorough exploration, they’ve designed it so certain actions and discoveries are only possible in Umbral, and others only in the Axiom realm. Also, when you defeat enemies in the living world, they’ll reappear in the land of the dead, but as different creatures – which is why you’ll encounter undead enemies.
Although Axiom shares similarities with Souls-like games, the developers are primarily aiming for Umbral to feel like a true horror experience. A key element is building a sense of dread and uncertainty, keeping players on edge about what might happen next.
I’m so hyped for Lords of the Fallen 2! It’s coming out later this year on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. And get this – if you’re a PlayStation Plus Essential member, it looks like we’ll be able to snag the first game for free this April! That’s awesome!
