The world of Middle-earth, created by J.R.R. Tolkien, is growing again with the new movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film will fill in the story between Bilbo Baggins leaving home and the Fellowship being formed. The filmmakers are leaning on familiar faces to draw audiences in, and have already brought back Ian McKellen as Gandalf, with hints that Elijah Wood might return as Frodo. However, the story also needs Aragorn to help hunt Gollum, and finding an actor to play him is proving difficult. Viggo Mortensen, who originally played Aragorn, is reportedly not interested in returning, so the studio needs to find someone new to take on the iconic role.
Although reports suggested Leo Woodall was the leading choice to play Aragorn in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Warner Bros. Discovery hadn’t officially confirmed anything. During a recent podcast interview on Happy Sad Confused, host Josh Horowitz directly asked Wood about the rumors, acknowledging the pressure of taking on such an iconic role. Wood acknowledged the challenge, saying it would be “tough… tough boots [to fill]… but that’s gonna be great.” This response strongly suggests he has been cast. Andy Serkis, also involved with The Lord of the Rings, further confirmed to ScreenRant that the team is actively recasting the role of Aragorn and is carefully considering potential actors.
Can The Hunt For Gollum Thrive With a New Aragorn?

Viggo Mortensen’s performance as Aragorn set such a high standard that many fans consider it the definitive version of the character, making it incredibly challenging for any new actor to take on the role. This casting change also comes at a difficult time for The Lord of the Rings franchise. The original Peter Jackson films were hugely popular, but the Hobbit trilogy didn’t perform as well, and recent projects like The Rings of Power on Prime Video and the animated film The War of the Rohirrim have divided fans. This means expectations are extremely high, and any mistakes will be heavily scrutinized. While Andy Serkis is known for his incredible acting through motion capture, his previous attempts at directing – including Breathe, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage – haven’t been major successes with audiences.
The production was a delicate balancing act, according to Andy Serkis. He explained to ScreenRant that the original Lord of the Rings team came back together for this project, ensuring it stays true to the established stories and Peter Jackson’s vision. While it will definitely feel like a classic Middle-earth film, this story delves deeper into the mind of Gollum, one of Tolkien’s most complicated characters. It’s a blend of familiar filmmaking techniques from the original trilogy with a new, intimate story. Serkis also noted they had to consider that many viewers might be experiencing Middle-earth for the very first time, making the whole process a unique challenge.
The new movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, will come out in cinemas on December 17, 2027.
