Nintendo recently released an update for both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 that quietly made minor adjustments to the Mario icons on both systems. While Nintendo has updated icons before, this is the first time this year, and the first time these particular icons have been changed. The updates are very subtle, focusing on refining the original designs rather than completely changing them, so most users likely won’t notice a difference.
Dataminer Oatmeal Dome has spotted some updates to both the classic and newer Mario icons. The differences are very subtle – things like cleaner edges, slight adjustments to positioning, and improved colors. You probably won’t notice them unless you look closely! Below, you can compare the new icons (on the right, from the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 22.0.0 update) with the older versions (on the left).

Nintendo Fans Are Happy
These aren’t massive changes overall, but Nintendo fans appreciate them. They’ve pointed out that even small adjustments can make a big difference in how something looks.
One Nintendo fan commented that the recent changes are an improvement, noting that the older versions looked a little strange. Another fan shared they’d recently noticed Mario looked better when pictured in the pipe and were surprised to learn the visuals had actually been updated.
Another Nintendo fan emphasized the small details, saying, “The newer games are just so much improved.”
Nintendo hasn’t explained why it’s updating these icons, so it’s hard to say what their overall plan is. We don’t know if all the main icons will get updated, or if these are just a few examples. Nintendo hasn’t shared any details, and likely won’t. So far, they’ve focused on icons not tied to the Nintendo Switch Online service, and we expect that trend to continue if they keep making these changes.
