Almost twenty years after a difficult start in theaters, the movie is now available to watch for free on Tubi.
As a big fantasy and sci-fi fan, I was thrilled to see The Golden Compass added to the platform earlier this month! It’s joined by some other favorites like Eragon, Dredd, Beautiful Creatures, and I Am Number Four. I remember seeing The Golden Compass when it came out in 2007 – it’s based on Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights, and the cast is amazing – Nicole Kidman, Sam Elliott, Eva Green, Dakota Blue Richards, and even Daniel Craig are all in it!
The Golden Compass’s Timeless Story Couldn’t Save Its Studio
In The Golden Compass, a girl named Lyra Richards embarks on a dangerous quest to defeat evil and save her best friend, along with other children who have been taken. Her journey takes her to the remote North, a world similar to our own but filled with talking animals and ruled by a powerful, sinister organization called the Magisterium.
The movie successfully captured the imaginative world of Pullman’s books, but adapting it for film proved challenging. Even now, it continues to split opinions, with critics giving it a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences only slightly more favorably at 51% based on over 250,000 reviews.
Despite being based on a popular book, the movie The Golden Compass was criticized for not staying true to the original story and for lacking creativity. As a result, it didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $372 million worldwide on a $180 million budget. This financial failure significantly impacted the studio’s plans for future films in the series.
Although The Golden Compass received a mixed reception and struggled financially, it did win some major awards, including Oscars and BAFTAs for its visual effects. However, these successes weren’t enough to guarantee sequels, and the planned trilogy based on the book series never materialized.
The His Dark Materials TV Reboot Saved Face for New Line
Although the first movie adaptation, The Golden Compass, wasn’t well-received, the story of His Dark Materials eventually got the treatment Pullman’s novels deserved. Over a decade after the initial film disappointed viewers, the series premiered on BBC One and HBO in 2019. His Dark Materials adapted all three books and aired new episodes until 2022.
Dafne Keen played Lyra, alongside Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Coulter, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby, and James McAvoy as Lord Asriel. The show was much better received than the previous adaptation, with some even comparing it to Game of Thrones. Staying closer to the original books, the series gained widespread praise from critics, earning an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being designated ‘Certified Fresh’ for all three seasons.
The Golden Compass film is now streaming for free on Tubi.
