Lucasfilm Is Reviving 1 Shelved Star Wars Movie (And I’m So Excited)

Disney and Lucasfilm are bringing back a Star Wars movie that was previously cancelled. After focusing heavily on TV shows following the 2019 launch of Disney+ and the release of *The Rise of Skywalker*, the companies are now revisiting film projects. While several movies were considered and even announced, some didn’t move forward – until now.

The movie *Rogue Squadron*, initially announced in December 2020, is reportedly being made again at Lucasfilm. It was intended to be a new *Star Wars* film for theaters after a pause following the release of *The Rise of Skywalker*, with a planned release in 2023. However, the project was put on hold in 2022, and while it hadn’t been officially cancelled, updates were scarce. Now, it appears development is back on track.

Lucasfilm has resumed work on Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie, according to industry source Daniel Richtman. Richtman shared on Patreon that the project, which had been paused, is now back in development.

We don’t know exactly how much work was done on the original *Rogue Squadron* project, but since there were no public updates between 2020 and 2022, it probably didn’t advance very far.

If rumors are true and Disney and Lucasfilm are planning a new *Rogue Squadron* movie, we can expect an official announcement eventually. If the film moves forward, Disney would likely add it to their schedule of upcoming releases fairly quickly.

While *Rogue Squadron* isn’t the only Star Wars movie to face development challenges, its revival after being put on hold is encouraging news for fans. It suggests that other announced, but paused, Star Wars projects could also be brought back into development if *Rogue Squadron* moves forward.

Other Notable Star Wars Movies That Were Shelved

Rian Johnson’s Trilogy

Following the release of The Last Jedi, which sparked debate among Star Wars fans, Lucasfilm announced that director Rian Johnson would create a new Star Wars trilogy. While no story details were shared, the studio expressed confidence in Johnson’s vision.

Since then, Johnson hasn’t continued working on his planned Star Wars trilogy. He’s focused on other projects instead, including several *Knives Out* movies and a TV series called *Poker Face* on Peacock.

Johnson has said he’d be open to working on another Star Wars project in the future, but at the moment, neither he nor Lucasfilm seem focused on continuing the story he started with his trilogy.

Lando

Donald Glover famously played Lando Calrissian in the movie *Solo: A Star Wars Story*. Following that success, Disney+ announced he’d reprise the role in his own series. However, the project hasn’t progressed much since then.

Despite the initial announcement, the project is still being developed as a feature film. Donald Glover and his brother, Stephen, are currently writing the screenplay. However, given the considerable time that has passed, many are questioning whether the film will actually be completed and released.

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie

Similar to Rian Johnson, Taika Waititi was slated to direct a Star Wars movie following his work on The Mandalorian. Unfortunately, there haven’t been any updates about his project, like with several other planned Star Wars films.

Waititi mentioned in 2023 that he was still writing the script, but he was facing challenges. While the project is officially still in development, it’s currently paused, and there’s a real possibility it might be cancelled altogether.

Simon Kinberg’s Trilogy

Following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, Simon Kinberg began working on a new trilogy of Star Wars films that would take place after the events of *The Rise of Skywalker*. While rumors suggested these would be labeled as Episodes X, XI, and XII, Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t officially confirmed that numbering.

There haven’t been any updates about Kinberg’s planned trilogy since it was first announced. While it’s still reportedly in the works, Lucasfilm appears to be prioritizing other projects at the moment.

Dave Filoni’s MandoVerse Film

Originally, the creators of the interconnected Star Wars Disney+ shows – including *The Mandalorian*, *Ahsoka*, *The Book of Boba Fett*, and *Skeleton Crew* – planned to wrap up the storylines with a big theatrical movie. However, those plans are now uncertain. Season 4 of *The Mandalorian* is being developed as a movie called *The Mandalorian & Grogu*, set to release in 2026, which changes how the overall story will conclude.

The development of the MandoVerse has been slower than anticipated. Plus, not all of the projects, like *The Book of Boba Fett*, have been successful, leading Lucasfilm to re-evaluate its plans.

A movie set in the world of *The Mandalorian* is still being planned. If *The Mandalorian & Grogu* does well, we might see other *Mandofocused films released before Dave Filoni begins work on a larger, more ambitious movie that combines stories and characters from multiple shows.
