Luke Bryan Clarifies “Misinformation” About Sister Kelly’s Death

Luke Bryan is reflecting on his heavy history of loss.

Nearly two decades after his sister, Kelly Bryan Cheshire, passed away in 2007 at the age of 39, the singer of “Country Girl” recently opened up about the painful experience and the circumstances surrounding her death.

Luke recently discussed his sister’s death on the All There Is podcast, clarifying that inaccurate information is circulating online and some people believe the family was being secretive. He explained that his sister died from what doctors called sudden death syndrome, a rare condition where someone dies unexpectedly without a clear cause.

The 49-year-old described how she was simply doing laundry at home when she suddenly collapsed. He said it was a devastating and heartbreaking event.

Luke, whose brother Chris Bryan died in a car accident in 1996, said there were “many questions left unanswered” about Kelly’s death, explaining that the autopsy didn’t provide any clear answers.

Luke remembered his mom, Kelly, as the center of their family. She was a wonderful mother to Jordan, 30, Kris, 27, and Tilden, 23, and they all depended on her for support. It’s difficult to accept that she’s no longer with them.

Luke had experienced loss before, mourning his brother Chris, who passed away at 26 when Luke was only 19. However, he explained that grieving the loss of his sister felt completely different.

He told Anderson Cooper that while you can imagine a car accident happening, it’s impossible to truly understand the shock of someone going from perfectly healthy to suddenly gone.

Honestly, it absolutely destroyed me to think about Leia’s kids losing their mom like that. Luke always said it best – he just couldn’t wrap his head around how they’d possibly get through life without what he called ‘the best mother on the planet.’ It just felt…wrong. Like a piece of the galaxy had gone dark. I mean, Leia was everything to those kids, and to everyone, really.

Even though things were difficult, the American Idol judge shared that having his sister’s children nearby helped him cope with his own loss.

He explained that when he looks at his nieces, he sees a lot of his sister in them – their mannerisms and other recognizable traits remind him strongly of her.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen families face incredible challenges, and Luke’s story is no exception. Just when things seemed to be settling, another heartbreaking event occurred in 2014. Kelly’s husband, Ben Lee Cheshire, unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack at the young age of 46. It was another unbelievable blow for the whole family.

Luke described feeling shocked and confused, wondering why something difficult had happened. He said the realization ‘just hit me like a ton of bricks’ – it was a sudden and overwhelming feeling.

After the tragic event, Luke and his wife, Caroline Boyer, officially adopted Luke’s nephew, Til, and took on the role of parents for his nieces. They also share two children of their own: Thomas, 17, and Tatum, 15.

“It’s just what you do as family,” he said. “You do what you can to try and make it.”

Even though Luke has experienced a lot of sadness, he says it’s actually helped him appreciate life more.

He explained that recent experiences have helped him focus on enjoying each day and cherishing time spent with loved ones.
