Luke Bryan still has Willie Spence close to his heart.
The American Idol judge spoke about the tragic death of a contestant from season 19, who died in a car accident at just 23 years old in October 2022, while also sharing what he’d do differently if he could revisit his time on the show.
He told Billboard that he wished he’d had more time with Willie Spence. He was deeply affected by Spence’s talent, recalling how breathtaking it was to watch him perform each week and how much he meant to him. Losing Spence is something he feels strongly.
The death deeply affected Luke, 49, who still thinks about the performer often.
He grew up in Douglas, Georgia, not far from where I’m from – about an hour away. His passing really hit me hard. Even now, when I see a video of him performing, it’s heartbreaking for him and his family, and I often wonder how successful he could have become.
The singer of “Country Girl” said that Willie’s passing made him think about how quickly life can change and how important it is to appreciate the people you love.

He explained it felt similar to attending a high school reunion and noticing some people are missing. After being on the show for so many years, he sadly realized they inevitably would lose cast and crew members over time.
I was absolutely heartbroken when I heard about Willie. It was so touching to see so many former Idol contestants reaching out to his family, sending their love and support. And the official Idol accounts? They were perfect, really honoring what a special person he was. It meant so much to see everyone come together like that.
The team at American Idol is heartbroken by the loss of Willie Spence. They shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he was a remarkably talented performer who brought joy to everyone around him and will be greatly missed. They extend their deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Kelly Clarkson, mother to River and Remy, has achieved incredible success since her debut on the first season of American Idol in 2002. Based in New York, she’s won three Grammy Awards, topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart three times, served as a judge on NBC’s The Voice, and is now wrapping up her celebrated daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The runner-up from season two of the show shared two important things in September 2008: he announced the birth of his son, Parker, with his friend and music producer, Jaymes Foster, and that this inspired him to come out publicly. He explained on Good Morning America that he didn’t want to raise his son to be dishonest or hide who he is, and he wanted to create a supportive environment where his son could be himself.
Since then, this well-known performer with red hair transitioned from music to politics, even running for Congress in 2016. After the election, he released a documentary about his life. However, he hasn’t completely left music behind – in 2023 and 2024, he toured the country with season two winner Ruben Studdard.

Ruben, the winner of season two of Idol, went on to achieve success with a Grammy nomination and several popular albums. In 2013, he appeared as a contestant on The Biggest Loser, quickly becoming a favorite among viewers. Although eliminated twice, he gained valuable insights from the experience. Despite remaining close with fellow contestant Clay, Ruben found lasting love with his wife, Kristin, and they welcomed their second child in 2024.

The season three champion recently expressed her gratitude for everything she’s experienced. In a December 2023 interview with TopMob News, she explained that life is full of ups and downs, and she’s learned to persevere through challenges. She shared that overcoming hardship, including rebuilding her life twice, feels incredibly rewarding.
Beyond her career success, she’s also celebrated personal milestones, like welcoming her daughter Keziah with husband Kendall Taylor in 2021, and receiving a Golden Globe nomination for the new film The Color Purple. The North Carolina native, who is also a mother to her adult daughter Zion, says she wants to savor this moment and appreciate all the hard work she’s put in to get where she is today.

Although she didn’t win season three of the competition, this musician has achieved incredible success! She won an Oscar for Dreamgirls in 2006 and a Grammy for her work in the 2017 adaptation of The Color Purple. She’s also been a judge on The Voice. Now, this mom to son David is launching her own talk show!

Carrie Underwood instantly became a pop culture icon when she appeared on Idol. She not only won season four, but has since become one of country music’s biggest stars.
For over a decade, she co-hosted the CMA Awards with Brad Paisley. In addition to her successful music career and hosting duties, Carrie is also a mom to two sons with her husband, Mike Fisher, a former NHL player.
Carrie Underwood will be joining the judging panel of American Idol in 2024, taking over for Katy Perry.

The season four runner-up is now a husband and father to three sons and one daughter. Even after battling significant health issues in 2006, this Southern rock artist has continued to release several successful albums following his time on Idol.

Oh my gosh, Constantine! I still get chills remembering his American Idol performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” – seriously, that voice and hair were EVERYTHING! It was SO clear he was destined for the stage, and he totally nailed it on Broadway in Rock of Ages – a Tony nomination? Deserved! And now, Rock & Roll Man? He’s just incredible! It makes me so happy to see him succeeding, especially knowing he’s a dad to his sweet daughter, Malena, born in 2010. He’s a total star!

Following his win on season five, the singer released a platinum-selling album and then appeared in a Broadway production of Grease. In 2016, he transitioned to television, hosting State-Plate, a show centered around locally-sourced food. Despite his TV work, he still loves music and continues to perform in concerts.

Before Justin Bieber captivated fans, Katharine McPhee gained attention through what some called “McPheever,” which led to roles in the TV shows Smash and Scorpion. She married David Foster in 2019 and they now have a son, Rennie, who shows a passion for music. In a 2023 interview, McPhee expressed her hope that Rennie will become proficient in playing various instruments, just like his father, but emphasized that they are letting him explore his interests naturally. She believes he’s already showing promise in that direction.

Following his appearance on American Idol, season five finalist Elliott Yamin, known for his hit song “Wait for You,” traveled to Angola. There, he teamed up with former Idol judge Kara DioGuardi to support Malaria No More. In 2010, he also gained attention for surviving the earthquake in Chile and sharing his experience on Twitter. Yamin continues to create music and is a father to daughter Camilla, with Karen Cruz.

Though she placed sixth on the fifth season of American Idol, Kellie Pickler went on to star in the Hallmark movie Christmas in Graceland and received three Daytime Emmy nominations for her TV show, Pickler & Ben.
After the tragic loss of her husband, Kyle Jacobs, to suicide in February 2023, Pickler shared a valuable lesson he taught her. She told People magazine that he showed her that in times of crisis, sometimes the best thing to do is simply “do nothing, just be still,” and she’s been following that advice.

The winner of season six made a big impact in 2007 as the youngest female to ever win the competition. She toured 35 U.S. cities and even made her Broadway debut in 2010 with In the Heights. Her success continued when she and Dana Isaiah welcomed their first son in May 2018. Since then, she’s returned to Idol and competed on season 31 of Dancing With the Stars.

David, best known for his hit song “Time of My Life” from season seven of a singing competition, has experienced success both on and off stage. In 2010, he traveled to Ethiopia with the United Nations to support programs empowering women. He also participated in the Race for Hope in Washington D.C., raising funds for brain cancer research in memory of his brother, Adam, who passed away in 2009. Married to Racheal Stump since 2015, David continues to tour and released his latest single, “TABOS,” in 2022.

After placing second on season seven of a singing competition, he spent two years serving a mission in Chile for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He resumed performing after returning in 2014.
He publicly came out as LGBTQ+ in June 2021. In an October 2023 Instagram post, he said, “It’s been a beautiful journey learning to accept myself,” and expressed hope that living authentically would inspire others to do the same.

While Adam Lambert received a lot of attention as the runner-up, season eight winner David Cook has steadily built a successful career. His second album, released in November 2009, reached No. 11 on the Billboard 200 chart, and his song “I Need to Know” was used in an episode of The Vampire Diaries. He’s also been focused on his personal life, welcoming three children with his wife, Katy O’Connell, whom he’s been with since high school.

The runner-up from the eighth season of the show has achieved massive success. Since appearing on the competition, he’s released multiple albums, gone on tour as a headliner, and received numerous award nominations. He’s even followed in the footsteps of Freddie Mercury by becoming the lead singer for Queen and starred in a remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He also briefly served as a guest judge on Idol and kicked off the 2019 Oscars with performances of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”

Danny Gokey married Leyicet Peralta in 2012, following his appearance on season eight of American Idol. They now have four children together.
Danny Gokey, a three-time Grammy nominee, released the Christian album Jesus People in 2021. He’s also the founder of Danny Gokey Eyewear, a brand specializing in glasses and sunglasses.

Following his appearance as a top 10 finalist on the 2010 summer tour, the season nine winner began his career as a solo musician. He married model and actress Jonna Walsh in 2012, after meeting her while filming his first music video after Idol. Today, he’s a successful singer-songwriter, and his music has even been featured in shows like The Walking Dead.

The singer, who finished as a runner-up on season nine of a singing competition, married musician Brian Walker and released her debut album, Farmer’s Daughter, in December 2010. Although her record label folded, she transitioned into acting, appearing on the second season of ABC’s Body of Proof.
In May 2013, she and her husband separated. Following their divorce, she described her second album, All That For This, to The Boot as representing a new phase in her life.

The winner of season 10 was the first American Idol champion since Ruben Studdard to have a debut album, Clear as Day, reach the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart. He was recognized as New Artist of the Year at the 2011 American Country Awards and performed the national anthem at Game 1 of the World Series that year. In June 2018, the singer of hits like “This Is It” and “Five More Minutes” married his longtime partner, Gabi Dugal. They welcomed their son, Avery, in October 2022.

Though she came in second place on the show, this country singer quickly signed a record deal and released her first album, Wildflower, in October 2011. After appearing on the show, she shared the stage with the winner at the CMT Music Awards, performed at the Grand Ole Opry for the first time, and even collaborated with Martina McBride at the CMA Music Festival.
In 2017, she received her first CMA nomination for Best New Artist thanks to the success of her album, Road Less Traveled. She also expanded her career into acting, starring in a movie with the same title.
More recently, the singer announced her engagement to Cam Arnold while performing at the Grand Ole Opry in November 2022, and they were married in February 2024.

Despite finishing in sixth place on season ten, this contestant became a fan favorite. He joined the Idols Live tour and even recorded a cover of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with fellow finalist and potential romantic interest, Haley Reinhart. He eventually signed with the jazz label Concord. His first self-titled album came out in 2012, followed by I Put A Spell On You in 2018 and Jazz in 2019.

Jimmie Allen was eliminated before the live shows on season 10 of a singing competition, but he’s since become a successful country artist with two number-one hits: “Best Shot” (2018) and “Make Me Want To.” He also won the Country Music Association’s New Artist of the Year award in 2021.
In April 2023, Jimmie and his wife, Alexis Allen, announced they were expecting their third child while simultaneously ending their two-year marriage. Shortly after, Jimmie was accused of sexual assault and abuse by his former manager in a lawsuit. He admitted to infidelity and publicly apologized to Alexis for the affair, but denied the abuse allegations, claiming the relationship with his former manager was consensual.
After welcoming their son, Cohen Ace James, in September, the couple shared that they were working to reconcile their marriage.

Following his victory on season 11, the musician’s single, “Home,” became a chart-topping hit and was featured as the theme song for NBC’s 2012 Summer Olympics coverage.
In 2015, he married Hannah Blackwell in a private ceremony with close family and friends. They later had a son, Patch, in 2019.

I’m so excited for everyone to hear the new album, Whirlwind! I chatted with the artist before it dropped in 2019 – a year after she won Idol – and she told me it’s really diverse. She doesn’t want to be limited to just one sound because she genuinely loves exploring all different styles, and it’s tough for her to pick a single direction. It really reflects her artistry!

After finishing as a finalist on season 16 of the show, the singer has been busy creating new music and taking advantage of the opportunities that came with being on ABC.
“Music has always been my passion, and I’ve always dreamed of being an artist,” Caleb Lee told TopMob News. “But I also learned a lot about the entertainment industry. I even got to attend Luke Bryan’s final tour show and perform a song with him!” He released his newest album, Southern Galactic, in October 2023.

Following her third-place finish on season 16 of Idol, singer Gabby Barrett concentrated on completing her album. She expressed her excitement about performing at Stagecoach and described touring with Brad Paisley as a fantastic bonus. “It’s crazy to be touring with him,” she shared with TopMob News.
Nearly two years after welcoming their daughter, Baylah, with her husband Cade Foehner, the couple had their son, Augustine, in October 2022. They expanded their family further in February 2024 with the arrival of their third child.
