As a big fan of the Marvel shows Netflix put out in the 2010s, I really enjoyed Luke Cage when it first came out in 2016. Mike Colter was fantastic in the lead role! It was connected to shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, and for a while, it felt like they were all building towards something bigger – that team-up series, The Defenders. It ran for two seasons and was a key part of that whole universe.
Netflix’s Marvel shows were all canceled by 2019 and disappeared from the streaming service by 2022. However, Daredevil has returned on Disney+ as Daredevil: Born Again, planned for three seasons, with the first premiering in 2025. The revival brought back familiar faces like Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal, and officially made those earlier storylines part of the official Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Krysten Ritter, who played Jessica Jones, will be back for the second season, leading fans to wonder if other actors from The Defenders might also return. Mike Colter recently discussed on Shawn Stockman’s On That Note whether he’d play Luke Cage again, and explained why he hesitated about doing so in the past.
The actor explained that he’s had discussions about returning to his role, but he initially told people he wouldn’t. He said after filming wrapped, he enjoyed playing Luke Cage, but also really wanted to explore other acting opportunities. Despite being hesitant before, Colter added that he appreciates Marvel fans and the universe the show created.
After a few years, Colter began to think there might be more to his role. He shared that he’d talked with Cheo Hodari Coker, the creator and showrunner of Luke Cage, about what could happen with the character next.
He mentioned Daredevil’s return and excitedly said he wished the Defenders team would reunite, specifically hoping to see Jessica Jones back as well. His wish came true with Krysten Ritter reprising her role, and he implied his own return might also be happening.
He believes things are progressing well and could happen sooner than expected, concluding with a cautious “We’ll see.” Colter has hinted at this before, playfully dodging questions about a potential return by saying he doesn’t understand why people keep asking, pointing out that there’s been no recent revival of the Marvel Netflix series to suggest it’s likely.
Fans have been buzzing about a possible reunion of the Defenders team, and recent sightings of actors Finn Jones (from Iron Fist) and Mike Colter (Luke Cage) in New York while Born Again season two was filming have only added to the excitement. Daredevil: Born Again season two is scheduled to release in March 2026, and Colter has hinted that Luke Cage might return to screens before too long.
