As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of M3GAN 2.0, but it seems the sequel might not live up to its predecessor in terms of box office success. Deadline reports that we can expect earnings of around $20 million domestically during its opening weekend, which is a far cry from the impressive $30.4 million domestic gross of the original M3GAN back in January 2023. This could be a concerning development for a franchise aiming to escalate with a more action-focused sequel.
Besides some well-known titles like “How to Train Your Dragon” and “28 Years Later” continuing to thrive in box offices, this weekend will also introduce a new racing drama titled “F1”. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and featuring Brad Pitt, the film is expected to generate revenue between $40-50 million within U.S. borders.
Following the staggering global success of M3GAN, raking in an impressive $180 million against a modest production budget of $12 million, Universal Pictures has wasted no time exploring franchise opportunities. Beyond a direct sequel, they’re also developing a spinoff titled SOULM8TE, set to hit theaters in January 2026. As a movie enthusiast eagerly anticipating these developments, I can hardly wait!
The promotional strategy for the movie “M3GAN 2.0” stands out, as it has wholeheartedly adopted the film’s over-the-top style, emphasizing its darkly comical and action sequences. The trailers and other marketing materials present the movie in a way that resembles a typical summer blockbuster, building anticipation around the confrontation between M3GAN and the latest malevolent AI named AMELIA (a plot reminiscent of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”).
The anticipated release date of M3GAN 2.0 is causing lower box office predictions compared to the initial film. Unlike the original M3GAN, which premiered in the U.S. at the beginning of January, right after Avatar: The Way of Water and with few other notable releases, M3GAN 2.0 is set for summer, a season typically filled with numerous movies competing for audience attention. With limited funds available to go around during this period, it’s a tougher market for M3GAN 2.0. Additionally, the success of another horror sequel, 28 Years Later, has set a high bar, further challenging M3GAN 2.0. Although M3GAN 2.0 is targeting a specific demographic in its marketing, the overall interest among general horror fans might be lower this time due to the abundance of other options. If M3GAN 2.0 were the only genre choice, the predictions might have been more optimistic.
It seems that people are holding onto their money for the upcoming trio of major studio movies in July – Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps are expected to have strong debuts, while M3GAN 2.0 may also draw a crowd. Despite its more ambitious scope, the budget for M3GAN 2.0 likely won’t increase drastically from the original’s $12 million, meaning it doesn’t need to make a massive profit to be successful. If word of mouth is good, it might even exceed expectations. Even if M3GAN 2.0 opens as expected, Universal can still have faith in the franchise’s future.
