M3GAN 2.0 Director Reveals New Version Is on the Way (Even After Box Office Struggles)

M3GAN isn’t finished quite yet – despite a slight stumble at the box office, it looks like there are still plans underway for a sequel. This news comes directly from Gerard Johnstone, the writer and director of the potential sequel, who shared with Discussing Film that an unrated version of M3GAN 2.0 already exists and will be distributed. This unrated cut will feature additional scenes, some of which were omitted to keep the film’s runtime manageable for theaters. Fans eager to see these extra scenes will have to wait until the movie’s home release before they can enjoy the bonus content that Johnstone has prepared especially for M3GAN fans.

According to director Gerard Johnstone, there will be an uncensored version of the film with additional scenes not included in the original release. The theatrical version is intended to run under two hours, but the extended cut will feature content that didn’t fit into the initial release. While he doesn’t specify the nature of these extra scenes, he mentions that some of the footage from the trailers were created exclusively for promotional purposes and not part of the actual movie.

He mentioned, “Additionally, several lines from the trailers contribute to the storytelling, yet M3GAN doesn’t speak these lines in the actual film. The studio required marketing materials. At times, the trailers were made before we could determine if a particular piece of music would fit the movie or not. However, indirectly, it still shapes the universe.

It’s not too unexpected that there might be an unrated version for M3GAN 2.0, considering the same happened with the first movie upon its home release. The unrated cut of M3GAN had more gore and profanity than the theater version, although it was slightly shorter. Since the M3GAN films have been rated PG-13 so far to attract a broader audience, the unrated version allows for more explicit language and a closer look at the gruesome deaths that are cut in the theatrical release due to ratings restrictions. While director Gerard Johnstone didn’t specify what changes the M3GAN 2.0 unrated version will have, it seems likely it will follow suit and take advantage of the lack of rating to explore the violent scenes more thoroughly on screen.

The long-awaited follow-up hit cinemas on June 27th, earning $10.2 million within the U.S., which is significantly less than the original film’s impressive $30.4 million opening nearly two and a half years prior. Despite not reaching box office predictions at this point, producer Jason Blum appears to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the sequel. He pointed out that although viewers expressed interest in more M3GAN, they may have overreached with the sequel, leading to an excessively planned storyline and potentially underestimating what audiences wanted from the popular character.

It’s uncertain if Blumhouse and Universal will create more sequels, but the M3GAN spinoff, SOULM8TE, is steadily heading towards a theater release on January 9, 2026.

If you’re eager to catch M3GAN 2.0 at the cinema, but could use a reminder about the original film beforehand, I’ve got you covered! The initial M3GAN movie can be found streaming now on both Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. Enjoy your viewing experience!
