It’s a long-standing discussion during the holiday season, unrelated to John McClane, that often arises: Is the original Home Alone or its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, superior? As a kid, I was particularly enamored with the sequel. The idea of Kevin McCallister roaming free in New York City ignited my imagination. Interestingly, Macaulay Culkin himself, the movie star, seems to share this preference, albeit for entirely different reasons. (Of course, it’s not solely because of the Pigeon Lady character.)
The one I feel the most connected to, due to my financial interest, is undoubtedly my favorite.
I earned more money. Now, I own around 5% of the net profits, as well as 15% of the merchandising. So if you purchase a Talkboy, consider it as giving me a 15% cut – thanks! By the way, I highly recommend getting a Talkboy this Christmas.
It seems justifiable. In fact, I’d likely choose the venture offering the highest profit, especially given the stature of the potential projects, which are akin to veritable box office sensations, much like these two blockbuster films.
In case you didn’t know, the Talkboy was initially developed as a toy for the movie “Home Alone 2”. However, it gained significant popularity following its on-screen debut and turned out to be the most successful toy of the 1993 Christmas season. Essentially, it was a voice recorder manufactured by Tiger Electronics. The company collaborated with the film’s production team to create it, and in the movie, Kevin utilizes it to deceive adults into giving him credit cards and cheese pizzas.
Is it possible to find modern versions of the Talkboy tape players? I used to own a couple of them as a kid, and I remember enjoying the scenes from “Getting Even With Dad” on those devices quite a lot. It’s nice to see that the film’s star has managed to achieve such a high success rate on those tapes. Keep up the good work, Mac!

The original “Home Alone” films are timeless masterpieces that raked in huge amounts at cinemas. Actor Macaulay Culkin, who played the main role, holds a special affection for the franchise not just due to its success, but also because of the deep bonds he formed with his co-stars, particularly Catherine O’Hara, who portrayed his on-screen mother. When they met again at the unveiling of their Hollywood Walk of Fame stars in 2023, Culkin was deeply emotional. On this occasion, O’Hara gave a touching speech about him.
The initial two movies featuring Macaulay Culkin will forever be cherished holiday masterpieces among fans, as they hold a unique enchantment that’s difficult to replicate. Despite numerous attempts with sequels, offshoots, and remakes – all available on Disney+ – the original charm seems to have eluded these newer productions. As for the latest attempt, Home Sweet Home Alone, it’s generally seen as a lackluster reboot, and while it’s technically a sequel to Culkin’s films, it’s more of a distant relative compared to its predecessors.
It’s delightful to spot Macaulay Culkin, a former child prodigy in Hollywood, still making waves in the entertainment world. He’s got quite a packed schedule for 2025, including lending his voice to a character in Disney’s upcoming “Zootopia 2,” scheduled for release on November 26. It’s unlikely he’ll have the same 15% deal as he did on “Home Alone 2,” but that’s probably not the focus anymore.
