The first Home Alone movie launched Macaulay Culkin‘s career, and he reprised his role in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. However, he hasn’t been in another Home Alone sequel since. Recently, Culkin said he’d consider returning and even suggested a sequel idea: a story focused on the complicated relationship between a father and son, using metaphorical ‘traps’ instead of a traditional home invasion. As of now, there are no official plans for future Home Alone movies.
According to PEOPLE magazine, Macaulay Culkin announced during his A Nostalgic Night event that he will be returning to acting.
“I wouldn’t be completely allergic to it … It would have to be just right.”
As Macaulay Culkin grew older, he mostly stepped away from acting and his famous role in Home Alone. However, he’s recently made a couple of commercial appearances, first for Google Assistant in 2018 and more recently for Home Instead. He shared details about how he came up with the idea for the commercials.
I’ve been thinking about a scenario where I’m either widowed or divorced, raising a child as a single parent. I’m focused on working hard, but I’m neglecting my child, and that’s causing some tension – to the point where I’m being shut out of their life.
Culkin imagines the new movie would center around Kevin’s son setting the booby traps, as a way to win back the audience’s affection – that’s the basic idea. He’s open to the concept, if it’s done well.
What Is the Status of the ‘Home Alone’ Franchise?

Walt Disney Studios / Disney+
After Macaulay Culkin left the Home Alone series, the films took a different direction. Home Alone 3 (1997) followed a group of thieves trying to recover a computer chip hidden inside a toy car that was accidentally switched at the airport. Home Alone 4 (2002), a TV movie, involved a kidnapping plot, but used new actors to play familiar characters. Home Alone: The Holiday Heist (2012), another TV movie, centered on thieves attempting to steal a painting from a house, unaware that a new family had moved in.
Disney+ tried to bring back the classic Home Alone formula in 2021 with Home Sweet Home Alone. The story centers on a boy accused of stealing a valuable doll from a couple desperate to save their home. While the movie connects to the original films – Devin Ratray returned as Buzz McCallister and even referenced his brother Kevin – it received very poor reviews, scoring only 15% positive on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although Disney hasn’t officially said what’s next for the Home Alone series, the revival of another popular ’90s Disney property, The Santa Clause, as the Disney+ series The Santa Clauses in 2022—which has already run for two seasons—suggests a similar pattern could occur. There was a 16-year gap between the last Santa Clause movie and the new series, so fans might have to wait a significant amount of time before seeing another Home Alone project.
