In honor of the launch of “Mafia: The Old Country“, developer Hangar 13 has teamed up with historian Professor John Dickie for a video analysis. This comparison explores how the game mirrors the actual Sicilian Mafia, as Prof. Dickie – an expert in Sicilian Mafia history – examines specific scenes from “Mafia: The Old Country” in relation to real-life events.
As I gaze upon the visual splendor unfolding before me, it strikes a chord reminiscent of those tranquil coastal regions near Palermo – a place steeped in history, known as the birthplace of the mafia. The harmonious blend of rolling hills and distant mountains creates an atmosphere that echoes the roots of this notorious organization.
Dickie further discusses different parts of Sicily, including rural estates and opulent homes of the affluent elite, which eventually became the primary settings where the actual Sicilian Mafia came into existence. In addition, he touches upon the fact that the sulfur mine mafia was indeed a genuine phenomenon when it comes to mafias controlling specific territories.
He pointed out that one major sector in Sicily was particularly grueling. Everyone was exploiting everyone else within the hierarchy, creating a ruthless environment. The artistry you see here is a testament to meticulous research, as it mirrors a well-known Sicilian painting depicting the child labor prevalent in the sulfur mines.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super pumped about Mafia: The Old Country! Today, we finally got a glimpse into this intriguing world through its launch trailer. The narrator is none other than Enzo Favara, who started as an indentured laborer but found his way into the Torrisi family.
Leading up to its release, Hangar 13 has announced that we can expect both Performance and Quality modes on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Although they’ve kept the specifics under wraps, they did hint that the Performance mode will run Mafia: The Old Country at an average frame rate of 60. Can’t wait to dive into this immersive game!
It’s yet to be officially announced by Hangar 13 which game modes and performance settings will be accessible on the less powerful Xbox Series S. However, given the console’s specifications, it’s reasonable to infer that the Performance mode, aiming for a resolution of 1080p with steady frame rates, might be its only available option.
For PC gaming enthusiasts, the studio recently unveiled the necessary and suggested hardware specifications to run the game effectively this month. Additionally, they provided distinct details about the hardware requirements for Mafia: The Old Country, particularly when set at the Epic preset. This setup is designed for playing on a 4K monitor, with the preset utilizing DLSS or FSR to render the game internally at 2880×1620, which can then be enhanced.
On PlayStation 5 Pro, the game “Mafia: The Old Country” offers several advanced features such as adjustable refresh rates and improved dynamic resolution. This is due to the game taking advantage of the PS5 Pro’s more powerful hardware and the presence of PSSR (PS5’s 4K-enabled variable refresh rate technology).
In collaboration with @getFANDOM, we invited Professor John Dickie, a historian specializing in the Sicilian Mafia, to break down #MafiaTheOldCountry.
