Magic: The Gathering Reveals Iconic ’90s Franchise as Mystery Release (And It Might Leave Spider-Man in the Dust)

The collectible card game *Magic: The Gathering* recently announced its plans for 2026, showcasing both new stories within its own fantasy world – including sets like *Lorwyn Eclipsed* and *Reality Fracture* – and collaborations with popular franchises, such as *Marvel Super Heroes* and *The Hobbit*. The final set reveal promised another exciting partnership, and Wizards of the Coast has now delivered: a set based on a popular franchise from the 1990s. Many believe this new set has the potential to be even more popular than *Magic’s* already highly anticipated *Spider-Man* set.

Wizards of the Coast previously hinted at another Universes Beyond set coming in 2026, and it’s now been revealed to be *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles*. The new *Magic: The Gathering* crossover set will include Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo, showcasing them in various designs. Some cards, like ‘Turtles Forever,’ even feature four different illustrations of the characters all on a single card.

Beyond the four main Turtles, this set will feature popular allies like Splinter, April O’Neil, and Casey Jones. There’s also a strong lineup of villains, including Krang, Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady, Baxter, Super Shredder, and the Rat King. We can expect to see even more characters revealed in the future.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Will Likely Soar Past Spider-Man for Three Reasons

Looking at the new *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* cards, it’s clear how this set differs from the *Spider-Man* set – and how it might actually be better. One key difference is that *Turtles* feels more connected to the core *Magic: The Gathering* gameplay than *Spider-Man* did, which is a bit surprising when you consider both franchises.

It’s easy to compare the two stories at first – both are set in modern-day New York City. However, that’s where the similarities end. While *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* has a present-day setting, it’s much more fantastical than *Spider-Man*. *Spider-Man* mainly features people in costumes, and many aren’t even superheroes. In contrast, *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* stars four mutant turtles who fight creatures like rhinos and boars, a crazy pink villain, and insect scientists. They’re simply very different kinds of stories.

The new set should have a wider variety of creatures and powerful items (Artifacts) than the *Spider-Man* set did, which felt limited in this area. I appreciate the playful use of the IP, like the Pizza-themed lands in the *Turtles* set, and I hope to see that expanded beyond just the lands. What I *don’t* want is a repeat of *Spider-Man*, where we got quirky Artifacts like a Bagel or a Subway Train, and underwhelming creatures like City Pigeons and Daily Bugle Reporters, along with Enchantments like ‘Rent Is Due’. To call the selection disappointing would be an understatement.

Based on the cards revealed so far, Mutagen is already a strong Artifact, and that hints at what we can expect from the rest of the set. Considering the focus on Dimension X technology and the intelligence of characters like Donatello, Baxter Stockman, and Krang, it should be easy to create many interesting and unique Artifacts and Enchantments.

If you’re excited to build a collection based on the *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* in *Magic: The Gathering*, Wizards of the Coast is making it easy to get started. They’ve released a pre-constructed Commander Deck, along with the usual Booster Packs, Bundles, and Draft Sets. They’ve even created a special four-player Turtle Team-Up Bundle and a themed Pizza Bundle! This *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* set is already proving very popular, and it could be one of the most exciting ‘Universes Beyond’ releases next year.
