Mahershala Ali Drives Another Stake Into the MCU’s Blade Heart

Mahershala Ali‘s recent comments on the “Vogue Off the Cut” podcast hint at potential problems for the long-delayed Blade reboot within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When asked about his upcoming Marvel movies, Ali’s response was blunt and seemingly disinterested, suggesting a growing frustration with the project. First announced to great excitement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the film has since been stuck in development limbo, facing numerous production delays and disappointing updates that cast doubt on its future.

In a noteworthy instance, Ali was put on the spot when his Jurassic World Rebirth co-star, Jonathan Bailey, asked the cast about the number of Marvel films they’d been in. Ali quickly responded, “Count me out,” he emphasized. “That’s more Scarlett’s domain,” he clarified, alluding to his Jurassic World Rebirth co-star, Scarlett Johansson.

Ali’s comment during the “Jurassic World Rebirth” premiere echoes a previous statement he made, saying “It’s time to call Marvel, I’m ready.” So far, his only confirmed appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been as an off-screen voice role at the end of 2021’s “Eternals”. The production of “Blade”, on the other hand, has gone through numerous changes. It’s had two director changes, with Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange stepping away, and has seen scripts written by several high-profile writers including Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, Michael Green, and Eric Pearson. The instability surrounding “Blade” has also affected the cast, with Delroy Lindo confirming his exit after a promising beginning that “for some reason, it just derailed”.

In simpler terms, the financial struggles of the Blade movie became quite real as they had to sell off some of their physical production assets. Producer Sev Ohanian from Sinners revealed that costumes designed by Ruth Carter for a 1920s-era version of Blade were sold to Ryan Coogler’s successful vampire film production. To make matters worse, David S. Goyer, who wrote the original Blade trilogy, tried to offer his help but was turned down by Marvel with the response, “We believe we have it figured out now and are in a good spot.” After Marvel declined his assistance, the project was removed from Disney’s release schedule, leaving it without a director or a scheduled release date.

Is Blade Being Replaced by the Midnight Sons?

As the “Blade” standalone movie seems stuck, there’s buzz that Marvel Studios might be focusing on a new supernatural project instead, named “Midnight Sons”. Interestingly, whispers suggest that Ghost Rider could take over as the leader of this team, a role initially thought to be Blade’s. This possible change in leadership coincides with reports that the “Midnight Sons” film is back in development, while the fate of “Blade” remains uncertain.

I’ve noticed some intriguing hints pointing towards Marvel preparing a team centered around Ghost Rider with a supernatural focus. The studio has indicated that Moon Knight, played by Oscar Isaac, will reappear in an upcoming film. Given his role as a classic member of the Midnight Sons, his presence is crucial. More importantly, the Disney+ series “Agatha All Along” introduced Jennifer Kale, a powerful sorceress portrayed by Sasheer Zamata. In the comics, Jennifer Kale shares strong ties with the mystical side of Marvel, is a member of the Midnight Sons, and is related to the first two Ghost Riders, Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch. Lastly, the recent series “Ironheart” has introduced Mephisto, a villain who has a significant connection to Ghost Rider in the comic books.
