As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m so excited to see The Mandalorian and Grogu back in theaters! And honestly, the future looks amazing for little Grogu – or “Baby Yoda” as many of us call him. I remember when he first showed up in The Mandalorian back in 2019 – he instantly became a phenomenon. It’s wild to think Lucasfilm kept him a secret for so long, even though it meant leaving money on the table with potential merchandise. But that secrecy was a brilliant move, and now it looks like Grogu could outlast pretty much any other character in the Star Wars universe. The new trailer just confirms it – we’re going to be seeing a lot more of him, and I can’t wait!
After the Golden Reel Awards, Lucasfilm’s former president, Kathleen Kennedy, told Variety that a popular fan theory about Grogu isn’t true. The theory suggested Grogu would finally speak in an upcoming film. Kennedy emphasized that Grogu, like other beloved characters, connects with audiences through emotion, not dialogue, and won’t be saying any words. She believes audiences will love Grogu even more in the new film, despite his continued silence.
Lucasfilm Need To Tread Carefully With Grogu
Fans thought Grogu, the character from The Mandalorian, might start talking in Season 3, especially in a cute scene where he attempts to say Din Djarin’s famous line, “This is the way.” However, the show’s creator, Jon Favreau, wasn’t certain when Grogu would begin to speak, suggesting he might already be communicating in his own way. Recent comments from Kathleen Kennedy indicate Lucasfilm isn’t planning to give Grogu a voice anytime soon.
There’s a good reason for that caution. Grogu is hugely popular – he’s become one of the biggest stars in the Star Wars universe – and the studio is understandably careful about changing anything that makes him so beloved. In fact, even having Grogu fully commit to the Mandalorian way at the end of Season 3 was a risk, because the tension between his Jedi background and his bond with Din Djarin was a key part of what made the story interesting. But that conflict couldn’t really continue indefinitely.
While Jon Favreau thinks Grogu will probably talk soon, ‘soon’ means something different for a creature that can live for centuries. Grogu is already over 50 years old, which shows his species develops much slower than humans. Also, Yoda was teaching Jedi by age 100, but Grogu spent decades in isolation, hindering his growth. This past trauma is likely why he still seems so much like a baby – it’s a surprisingly serious reason behind his adorable appearance.
It’s uncertain what will happen with Grogu after the upcoming Star Wars movie. While the film’s success will likely be a major factor, The Mandalorian and Grogu was made with a relatively low budget, so it shouldn’t be difficult for the movie to become profitable. Lucasfilm will probably make a thoughtful decision about whether to continue Grogu’s adventures in theaters or on Disney+, based on how well the film does.
