Major X-Men ’97 Rumor Debunked by Star (And Marvel Fans Will Be Dissapointed)

Despite the success of its first season, which revived the 1990s X-Men cartoon with strong storytelling and inclusive representation, the second season of X-Men ’97 will look a bit different. Disney unexpectedly fired Beau DeMayo, the show’s head writer, after he’d already completed the scripts for the entire season. Before his firing, DeMayo had publicly announced that Neve Campbell would be joining the cast as the voice of Polaris, but that plan is no longer happening.

While promoting Scream 7 with The Movie Dweeb, Neve Campbell addressed rumors about her involvement with X-Men ’97. She confirmed she hadn’t joined the show, stating, “I have not… No, I haven’t.” Campbell acknowledged the rumor and added with a laugh, “It’s amazing, the internet, what it can create.” She did express her enthusiasm for the project, implying she’d be open to joining in the future.

Beau DeMayo Previously Said He Hired Neve Campbell for X-Men ’97

The main mystery is why Beau DeMayo claimed to have cast Neve Campbell as Polaris if it didn’t actually happen. We only have DeMayo’s word for it, and there’s no confirmation. It’s possible he did offer her the role, but when he was let go, the deal fell through. While Campbell stated she wouldn’t be involved in the animated series, she may have been in talks to join before that.

The announcement of Neve Campbell joining X-Men ’97 came about after a rumor spread on X (formerly Twitter) claiming she was playing Polaris in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, producer Eric DeMayo quickly clarified that she’s actually voicing Polaris for the second season of X-Men ’97, praising her performance as bringing a fresh take to the character. This initially suggested she had already recorded lines for the show, but it’s either not the case, or Campbell may be bound by confidentiality agreements (NDAs) common with Disney and Marvel, leading to a misunderstanding.

You’re right to point that out! I chose her to play Polaris in the second season of #xmen97. She’s fantastic and brings a fresh take to the character. It felt fitting to have a 90s icon continue Lorna’s story from “Cold Comfort.” She also has some interesting ideas about Genosha.

As a big film buff, I was really excited to hear Neve Campbell might be joining X-Men ’97. She’s of course famous for playing Sidney Prescott in all the Scream movies – she’s been in six out of seven! But it felt like a perfect fit because she was a huge star in the ’90s, and so was Polaris, though she didn’t get a lot of screen time in the original X-Men cartoon. Polaris only showed up twice in the original series, and even then, she didn’t have any lines! So the idea of Neve voicing her felt like a great way to bring that ’90s nostalgia and give the character some real prominence.

Polaris appeared in the first part of the “Tolerance is Extinction” storyline, showing Magneto a possible future where she helped rebuild society after the Sentinels caused widespread destruction. Her fate was particularly interesting, as the original comic series ended with her ending her relationship with Iceman and beginning one with Havoc while working with X-Factor. However, according to writer Louise Campbell, rumors of her appearing in X-Men ’97 are unfounded, and a comment from writer Chris Claremont about her joining the show didn’t come to fruition.
