After a 20-year break, the Wilkerson family is back for a new show, but fans haven’t seen every member yet. Hulu released the first trailer for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair on Monday, ahead of its April 10th premiere. While Frankie Muniz returns as Malcolm, his brother Dewey was not featured in the trailer.
The new series begins 19 years after the original show ended in 2006 after seven seasons on Fox. Malcolm, now a father himself, has been trying to keep his daughter and himself separate from his famously chaotic family – but he’s pulled back in when his parents celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. The trailer for the revival showed familiar faces like Hal (Bryan Cranston), Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), Francis (Christopher Masterson), Reese (Justin Berfield), and Malcolm (Frankie Muniz). Notably, the youngest brother, Dewey, who was originally played by Erik Per Sullivan, will be portrayed by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark in the new series.
Why Was Dewey Recast in the Malcolm in the Middle Revival?
Bryan Cranston recently shared that Erik Sullivan, who played Dewey on the original Malcolm in the Middle, won’t be appearing in the upcoming reboot. Sullivan was a key part of the show, appearing in all 151 episodes as Dewey, and fans were surprised and disappointed by his absence, especially since most of the original cast is reuniting. According to Cranston, speaking on David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, Sullivan was asked to return but ultimately decided not to.
Following the conclusion of the popular sitcom, Sullivan continued acting, appearing in films like Once Not Far From Home and Arthur and the Invisibles before deciding to leave the profession. His last acting role was in the 2010 film Twelve. Since then, Sullivan has lived a private life, and Kaczmarek recently shared in an interview that he is thriving and currently studying Victorian literature at a highly-regarded American university.
Fortunately, the character of Dewey is in capable hands with actor Kyle Ellsworth-Clark. He’s been working steadily since 2013, appearing in popular shows like The Expanse, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Fargo. Many fans will recognize him from his role as Tucker Gardner on Wynonna Earp, and he recently starred in the 2025 short film No Artichokes. While promotional materials for the Malcolm in the Middle reboot haven’t featured Ellsworth-Clark yet, fans shouldn’t have to worry about a drastic change, as he closely resembles the original actor who played Dewey.
