After 20 years, Malcolm in the Middle is back with a new series on Hulu, called Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. While fans were hoping for more, the revival consists of just four episodes. Despite its short length, the series captures the original show’s humor and heart, and it’s great to see the original creator and cast involved again.
Twenty years after the original show, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair brings back Malcolm and his signature narration, along with a family that’s just as wild as before. The revival offers both the possibility of more episodes in the future and a satisfying conclusion if this is the end. Here’s a ranking of every episode, from the least to the most enjoyable.
4). Episode Two

The second episode of the miniseries faces a tough challenge following a very strong premiere. It builds on the foundation laid in the first episode, successfully introducing the new character Kelly and her role within the family. The contrast between Kelly and Reese’s playfully mean behavior creates an entertaining rivalry, with Hal often caught in the middle. Bryan Cranston delivers a particularly impressive performance as Hal, blending emotional depth with some truly funny physical comedy.
The scene of Hal being wheeled down the hallway in a curled-up position is a hilarious visual that feels right at home in the show. Similarly, using Malcolm’s daughter Leah’s school life allows the series to revisit its focus on childhood stories in a fresh way. This episode relies a bit more on setting up future events, which holds it back slightly compared to others. While it’s packed with funny moments and jokes – especially involving Reese and Francis – it doesn’t quite stand out as much as other episodes.
3). Episode Three

If it’s been a while since you’ve seen Malcolm in the Middle, you might be surprised by how much fun episodes focused on Hal can be. These stories often led to some of the show’s most creative moments, and this miniseries episode is no exception. It’s the one where Hal accidentally takes a lot of drugs and has a major realization about his life – he finally understands his family has been using him for years. It’s a darkly humorous episode that feels perfectly in line with Hal’s overall story.
Throughout the episode, several events build towards a rewarding conclusion. Francis understands his mother’s genuine affection for his baby, Malcolm’s daughter motivates him to reconnect with his family, Reese freely embraces his mischievous side, and a dramatic car accident—quickly resolved in the next episode—brings everything to a close. It’s an effective setup for the finale.
2). Episode One

The first episode of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is a fantastic return for fans of the original show. It shows Malcolm living separately from his family, while the rest of the family is closer than ever. The episode includes some delightful cameos from familiar faces – even some you wouldn’t expect to see – without relying too heavily on nostalgia. Mostly, it focuses on where everyone is at now and sets the stage for the new season.
The first episode introduces Leah, Malcolm’s daughter, who experiences the kind of teenage adventures her dad used to have, but updated for today’s world. It’s a great mix of the original show’s over-the-top humor with new characters and elements you’d find in modern sitcoms. This makes it easy for new viewers to jump in, while also giving long-time fans a nostalgic and satisfying experience. Everyone feels true to character, and it’s particularly fun to see Malcolm still getting into trouble, just like old times.
1). Episode Four

Similar to its fantastic start, the Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair revival also ends on a high note. However, the finale will likely resonate most with longtime fans of the original series. The reunion aspect really shines, particularly with the celebration of Lois and Hal’s 20th anniversary, as it allows many beloved characters from the past to make updated appearances – and every one of them is a welcome addition.
As a critic, I have to say the finale truly delivers. It’s the emotional heart of the whole miniseries, finally giving us the resolution we needed between Malcolm and his mother. Seeing them connect as adults, with Malcolm finally sharing his feelings about that infamous speech, was incredibly powerful. But it wasn’t just about them; the entire family steps up, beautifully expressing their gratitude to their father. After twenty years with the original series, this episode resonates deeply and provides a fantastic, satisfying conclusion. It really went out on top.
