The new Malcolm in the Middle series, called Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, is now available to watch on Hulu, and people are sharing their opinions about it. The official Rotten Tomatoes score has been released, and it seems to be a fair assessment of the show.
The new series, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, has been well-received, earning an 82% score from critics (based on 33 reviews) and a 75% audience score (from over 50 ratings). This is a promising start for a revival series, which often struggle to recreate the success of the original show after many years. Malcolm in the Middle appears to be one of the revivals that is successfully capturing the spirit of the original.
What Critics Are Saying

According to Robert Lloyd of the LA Times, the latest season relies heavily on references to the original series, making it more enjoyable for those familiar with it. While the season continues the existing storylines, it doesn’t really innovate or modernize itself. It stays true to its roots, becoming more emotionally resonant when it matters most, and promises satisfying conclusions and character growth. The show also seems aware of its own emotional weight and will likely throw in a surprising twist to lighten the mood.
The review is generally positive, but Dave Nemetz at TV Line has a different opinion. He questions the short length of Hulu’s Malcolm in the Middle revival – just four half-hour episodes – and even suggests that it feels too drawn out. While he enjoyed the original show, Nemetz ultimately feels the revival doesn’t capture the same exciting energy, despite the return of most of the original cast and the addition of new characters.
It was always going to be difficult to satisfy everyone with Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, so the criticism isn’t surprising. However, it’s important to remember that this is the first time the cast has reunited as this family in two decades, and some haven’t continued with professional acting. Others, like Bryan Cranston, have become incredibly successful in other roles – it’s a little strange seeing Walter White from Breaking Bad in such a silly context.
The new show, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, revisits the characters 19 years after the original series ended. Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) is now a dad and has been trying to keep his daughter, Leah (Keeley Karsten), away from his famously chaotic family. However, he’s pulled back into the fold when his parents celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, and predictably, things get wild.
The revival will bring back many familiar faces, including Malcolm’s parents, Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), his brothers Francis (Christopher Masterson) and Reese (Justin Berfield), and several other original cast members. Dewey, Malcolm’s youngest brother, will be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, taking over the role. Kiana Madeira joins the cast as Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan, and Vaughan Murrae will play Hal and Lois’s new daughter, Kelly. Emy Coligado is returning as Francis’s wife, Piama, and Anthony Timpano will reprise his role as Jamie, the youngest child. David Anthony Higgins and Garty Anthony Williams will also be back as Lois’s coworkers, Craig and Abe, and Craig Lamar Traylor and Merrin Dungey will return as Stevie and his mother, Kitty. Expect to see other recurring and guest stars from the original series make appearances as well.
