Man of Tomorrow: How Strong Lex Luthor’s Power Suit Will Make Him Compared to Superman

James Gunn is actively filming his upcoming Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, and, true to form, he’s already building excitement by sharing glimpses from the set. As he previously hinted when revealing the first teaser, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor will be sporting his famous “warsuit” armor, and the initial image suggests a remarkably faithful adaptation from the comics.

Fans who’ve followed DC comics for a while are familiar with Lex Luthor’s battles in his powerful suit of armor. But if you’re new to these stories, you might be wondering: can any armor actually protect someone from Superman’s incredible strength?

Lex Luthor’s Warsuit Is An Alien Upgrade

Lex Luthor’s battlesuit, a key part of the Superman story, has been redesigned many times over the years. Fans usually have a favorite version from comics, video games, or animated series. Despite these changes, most versions share a common origin: how Lex Luthor actually builds the suit.

The common story shows Lex Luthor using a Kryptonian battlesuit, improving it with his own advanced technology – sometimes by borrowing from others. This blend of alien and cutting-edge tech turns him into a powerful supervillain, giving him impressive abilities, such as:

  • Kryptonite-powered weaponry – Pretty much every version of Lex’s warsuit comes with Kryptonite built into the weapons system. Lex can fire Kryptonite blasts, and as time has gone on, he’s added guns capable of cycling through different colors of Kryptonite, which each affect Superman differently. Lex also packs Kryptonite energy spikes and blades capable of cutting or impaling Superman, as well as handheld Kryptonite weapons like an axe, spear, or other bladed weapons infused with the element. It’s key to understand that this Kryptonite-powered arsenal is the key decider in how a battle with Superman will go. But more on that, below.
  • Enhanced Strength – Lex’s suit can overpower most enhanced individuals, and has even defeated the likes of highly-trained fighters like Batman or Deathstroke. It is not, however, able to match Superman, even at his standard power level.
  • Enhanced Durability – Given the combination of alien and high-tech alloys, the warsuit can withstand a ton of battle damage, and can even hold its own against Superman’s powers. It often comes down to Superman having to peel the armor off in pieces or layers, eventually getting to Luthor himself.
  • Flight – Rocket boosters in the boots let Luthor fly
  • Force Fields & Energy Projection – Luthor can manipulate energy to create force fields to protect himself (including Kryptonite-powered fields), as well as projecting energy out of the armor as force blasts or other forms of heat or lasers.

Is Lex Luthor’s Warsuit Armor Stronger Than Superman?

It’s complicated. While Lex Luthor has never definitively defeated Superman in a straight fight, he’s had temporary victories thanks to his armored suit, especially when it’s equipped with Kryptonite. The Kryptonite weakens Superman while the suit enhances Lex’s strength, creating a more even playing field. When their powers are balanced, Lex is capable of winning. Improvements to the suit, like those powered by technology from Apokolips, make Lex even more formidable against Superman.

Because comic books follow certain patterns, Lex Luthor can never fully control his Kryptonite-powered suit for very long. Superman and his friends always manage to disrupt the suit’s effects or protect themselves from them. Without these advantages, Lex simply can’t become powerful enough to defeat Superman.

The main challenge in James Gunn’s movie will be whether Lex Luthor’s powerful armor can withstand Brainiac (Lars Eidinger), or if relying on technology will ultimately be its downfall.
