Man of Tomorrow Isn’t the Right Place to Introduce Wonder Woman (But It Could Use Another Powerful DC Heroine)

As a DC fan, I’m a little worried things are moving too slowly with the new DC Universe. James Gunn has announced a few projects, but they all feel really connected, almost overlapping. Creature Commandos feels the most separate, but even it brings in Rick Flag Sr., who’s then also in Superman and the upcoming season of Peacemaker. It’s like Frank Grillo’s character is the new Nick Fury – showing up everywhere and driving the plot forward. Honestly, though, I didn’t expect him to be one of the main faces of this new universe; I thought that role was reserved for the classic DC Trinity – Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

Batman’s position as a key hero is already established – even with limited screen time, it’s clear he protects Gotham. Superman is also secure, with one solo movie released and another planned, featuring a showdown with Lex Luthor. However, rumors suggest the upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, has bigger plans than just uniting DC’s heroes and villains. While many hope Wonder Woman will appear, it doesn’t seem like the right move – the sequel would benefit more from featuring a different female hero.

All Signs Point to Wonder Woman Appearing in Man of Tomorrow

Even though Superman has been featured in many stories, DC Studios is still moving forward with a new film called Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release in 2027. James Gunn, the director, has been sharing updates on the script and teasing what fans can expect, including clues about the villain. Recent rumors suggest Brainiac will be the character who pushes Lex Luthor and Superman to work together, and Gunn hasn’t denied this possibility. He’s also staying quiet about it, though. The film is reportedly looking for a woman in her 20s to play a strong, edgy warrior, and many fans believe Wonder Woman is a likely candidate.

James Gunn is constantly emphasizing how important Wonder Woman is to the new DC Universe, which is great to hear. But talk is cheap, and honestly, we haven’t seen much progress on a dedicated Wonder Woman movie beyond hiring a writer. I get the sense Gunn is eager to get all members of the ‘Trinity’ onscreen, and maybe get Wonder Woman involved before her solo film. However, that approach feels a little… familiar. The previous DC Universe made the same move, introducing Wonder Woman in a Superman sequel – she was strong in Batman v Superman, but things quickly went south after that. I think the DCU would be smarter to hold off on integrating Wonder Woman until her movie is truly ready, and instead focus on adding another powerful character to Man of Tomorrow.

Another DC Heroine Fits the Story James Gunn Is Telling

The season finale of Peacemaker reveals Rick Flag sending Christopher Smith to a place called “Salvation,” which is actually an alternate reality intended as a prison for superpowered individuals. This is a surprising turn of events, but the comic book backstory of Salvation makes it even more concerning. The Salvation Run comics depict this “vacation destination” as a battleground where villains are forced to fight the forces of Apokolips, which uses the planet for training. While James Gunn says the DC Universe isn’t ready for Darkseid, the possibility remains that he’s drawing inspiration from the comics, potentially paving the way for the introduction of the New Gods.

Big Barda is Apokolips’ strongest female warrior and leads the deadly Female Furies. But she eventually rejects her evil past, leaving her family to become a hero and even joining the Justice League. Fans are eager to see her story adapted for live-action, as she offers a unique character without overshadowing Wonder Woman. The DC Universe has plenty of space for both of these powerful women.

Man of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 9, 2027.
