Manga Publisher Cancels Big Series Following Reveal of Author’s Controversial Past

The manga community is facing a significant issue this week. Publisher Manga One and its parent company, Shogakukan, are under fire after revelations about an author’s past. Several manga creators have responded by saying they may stop working with Manga One altogether, even threatening to halt their own projects until the publisher addresses the situation. Manga One has now released a statement concerning author Yamamoto Shoichi and his manga, Operation Fallen Angel.

Reports show that Shoichi, the creator of the manga “Operation Fallen Angel” (also known as Joujin Kamen), was previously arrested and convicted of sexually assaulting a student he taught. He had worked as a drawing instructor at a private high school where the incident occurred. Following news of his recent arrest and indictment for violating child pornography laws and receiving a fine, Shogakukan announced that Yamamoto (Shoichi’s pen name) is no longer affiliated with the company and “Operation Fallen Angel” has been cancelled. Shogakukan also admitted a mistake in allowing him to continue working under a different pseudonym, “Ichiro Ichi,” as the author of a new series, “Ordinary Mask.”

The Manga World’s Latest Controversy Explained

Manga One has stated they are committed to preventing similar issues from happening again. They plan to form an investigation team, including legal experts, to determine exactly what happened – from how the series began to the editor’s role and any related negotiations. They will then publicly share the investigation’s findings, take appropriate disciplinary action, and put new safeguards in place to avoid future problems.

Tsuruyoshi Eri, the artist behind Joujin Kamen, said she didn’t know about the author’s past actions, and many prominent figures in the manga world criticized Manga One because of it. Even ONE, the creator of One-Punch Man, threatened to stop working with Shogakukan if the situation wasn’t addressed. He explained, “I won’t collaborate with anyone who doesn’t strongly condemn the sexual abuse of children – that’s non-negotiable.”

Ryuhei Tamura, the creator of the popular new manga COSMOS, has requested that his series be paused following a recent incident. He told his editor he was deeply shocked by the situation. Haro Aso, author of Zom 100: Bucket List of The Dead, has made a similar request to halt his series as well. It’s currently unknown if either manga will continue on Manga One after the firing of Yamamoto Shoichi.
