As the March 5th release of Marathon nears, developer Bungie has been building excitement through trailers, showcases, and events. WCCFTech reports that a recent preview event for Chinese media led to the release of gameplay videos and initial reactions.
Chinese media outlets responded positively to the recent demo, particularly highlighting the helpful tutorials and detailed explanations of different in-game groups. Reviewers noted that the game, Marathon, has greatly expanded its story and world, offering players a clearer and more connected narrative as they complete missions in this extraction shooter.
Players found the combat in the game’s PvE mode to be quite difficult. Enemies weren’t passive – they actively called for backup during fights. Adding to the challenge were various environmental dangers like landmines, turrets, and poison gas. Managing resources was also key, and some players felt that essential items like shields and healing were too expensive to buy.
The game’s challenge level made players think twice before rushing into early conflicts, whether against computer opponents or other players. Instead, the focus was on finishing missions to gather essential supplies. The game also offered flexible map sizes, accommodating anywhere from 12 players (in smaller maps with four squads of three) to 18 players divided into six three-player squads.
Players have also praised Marathon for its improved graphics since the initial testing phase, its redesigned user interface and experience, and the balanced skills assigned to each character class (Shell). Many of these Shells also have unique movement abilities that complement the game’s solid gunplay.
I just saw this awesome 10-minute video on bilibili showing off a new event in the Abyssal Swamp! It looked so cool – there was a bit of everything, like figuring out puzzles and fighting off waves of enemies. It all led to a boss fight where you could win some loot and, get this, a keycard to unlock the next part of the event! Sadly, the video’s been taken down now, which is a real bummer because I wanted to watch it again.
In a conversation with Ali123, game director Joe Ziegler explained that Marathon will feature seasonal content designed as an extended, roguelike adventure. Players will become more powerful over time by collecting resources and engaging with new systems and content that change with each season.
In Marathon, each new season will be like a completely fresh start for players. The developers are planning these seasons to feel like extended ‘roguelike adventures,’ where you begin with limited resources and work to become more powerful in your own way. To make each season feel different, they’ll add new content and gameplay mechanics. However, some things you earn, like cosmetic items you’ve unlocked or bought, will stay with your account and carry over to future seasons.
You can learn more about the game Marathon by watching trailers featuring the Assassin and Destroyer classes. This extraction shooter will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
