It’s easy to forget about Bungie’s Marathon, especially with so many similar games available and recent issues surrounding its development. However, Sony, the company that owns Bungie, hasn’t abandoned the project. According to CFO Lin Tao, Marathon is still planned to release before the end of this fiscal year.
During our recent earnings call, she discussed the progress of Marathon. She explained that development is ongoing and that they recently conducted a technical test with 80,000 players from October 22nd to 28th. The main focus of this test was to evaluate gameplay and player retention – key metrics for the game’s success.
The team is currently reviewing how well the game is meeting its goals and will make adjustments if necessary. According to Tao, they remain committed to releasing the game on schedule and still expect to launch it this year, as previously predicted.
The game Marathon was originally planned for release last September, but problems with its quality and accusations of stolen artwork caused a delay, reportedly impacting studio morale. Bungie has stated it will announce a new release date this fall, ideally in November, though it hasn’t confirmed if the game will launch this year.
It now appears very likely the game will be delayed until early 2026, likely to avoid launching at the same time as popular shooters like Escape from Tarkov and ARC Raiders. On the bright side, the recent closed test gave Embark Studios valuable feedback on what’s working well with the game.
