Margot Robbie Gets Honest About What It Was Like Shooting Wuthering Heights 3 Months After Becoming A Mom

Becoming a mother is a huge life change, but imagine going through that while also being a major movie star! Margot Robbie recently had her first child with her husband, Tom Ackerley, in October 2024, and quickly began filming a new movie version of Wuthering Heights with Jacob Elordi. Before the film’s release as part of the wave of book adaptations coming to the big screen in 2026, Robbie shared her experiences balancing motherhood and work.

Margot Robbie recently told Vogue that she and director Emerald Fennell hope their upcoming film, based on Wuthering Heights, will become as iconic for this generation as Titanic was. She also openly discussed the challenges of filming while being a new mom.

We started filming when my baby was three months old, so I was still adjusting to a lot of changes and wasn’t able to follow my normal preparation process. It felt a bit chaotic, and I worried I wouldn’t be ready. Emerald, the director, reassured me that she didn’t want me to over-prepare; she just wanted me to be present in the moment. That really helped calm my nerves and allowed me to focus on feeling, rather than thinking.

It’s common for mothers around the world to return to work after having a baby, typically around six weeks postpartum, if their circumstances allow, as recommended by experts. For Margot Robbie, this meant filming in the United Kingdom from January to April, where she played Catherine Earnshaw opposite Jacob Elordi’s Heathcliff.

Following the filming of Wuthering Heights, Robbie attended her first red carpet event in August for A Big, Bold Beautiful Journey. While promoting the film, a video of her baby playfully interrupting an interview quickly became popular online.

Ever since the first look at the new Wuthering Heights film was released, it’s been described as a bold take on Emily Brontë’s classic story. After an early preview sparked reactions calling it “aggressively provocative” and criticism about a lack of diversity in casting, the movie is already generating a lot of buzz before it comes out this winter. In a recent interview, actress Robbie described it as a great choice for a date night and expressed hope that women will enjoy it with their friends.

Margot Robbie and Emerald Fennell have collaborated on three films now: Fennell’s first film as a director, 2020’s Promising Young Woman, the 2023 hit Saltburn, and this latest project. This marks the first time Robbie takes the lead role in a Fennell-directed movie. Although Robbie was initially worried about returning to work so soon after becoming a mother, Fennell apparently helped her feel more settled. Like many moms, Robbie had to balance work with motherhood and didn’t have as much time to prepare as she usually would.

You can see Margot Robbie in Wuthering Heights only in theaters starting on February 11.
