‘Mario Galaxy’ and ‘Project Hail Mary’ Continue Box Office Dominance

Movie theaters continued to see increased business this past weekend, largely thanks to two popular space-themed films. The Super Mario Bros. Movie remained the top earner, bringing in another $69 million in North America. So far, it has made $308.1 million domestically and $628.7 million worldwide. While ticket sales dropped 48% from the previous weekend (according to Variety), that’s typical for a big hit. Sales are also slightly behind the original Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023, which is expected now that the initial excitement has faded, but overall numbers remain very strong.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is on track to be one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, and hopefully, its success will be understood correctly by the film industry. It’s already earned more at the box office than Project Hail Mary, even though it’s been out for a shorter time. Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling’s space film continues to do well, having made $256.6 million in the US and $510.6 million worldwide. It just earned another $24.5 million domestically this past weekend, with ticket sales dropping only slightly from the week before, which shows it’s still attracting audiences. This is a particularly important win for Amazon MGM Studios.

The romantic drama The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, came in third place with $8.7 million in domestic earnings, bringing its total in the US to $30.8 million. It has earned $65 million globally, easily surpassing its $28 million production budget. The new release You, Me & Tuscany landed in fourth place, earning $8 million domestically and $9.1 million worldwide. With a budget of only $18 million, the film is expected to be profitable.

The new movie You, Me & Tuscany features Halle Bailey (known from The Little Mermaid) and Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton) as two people who fall in love after meeting at an old villa in Tuscany. It’s a classic romantic comedy, a bit different from the more daring The Drama, but both films show that audiences still enjoy romantic stories. Another recent romance, Reminders of Him, based on a novel by Colleen Hoover, continues to do well, earning $84.1 million worldwide despite being in theaters for over a month. With a budget of just $25 million, Reminders of Him has already proven to be profitable. This shows Hollywood that romantic comedies are still a winning formula!

Pixar’s newest film, Hoppers, earned fifth place in the box office, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $354.4 million. This success is notable because it breaks a recent pattern of original Pixar movies not performing well in theaters. While it didn’t quite meet Disney’s high expectations, the company can still profit from the film by attracting viewers to Disney+ and selling related merchandise.

The domestic box office is doing much better this year, with ticket sales up 23% compared to last year. Popular movies like Scream 7, Hoppers, Project Hail Mary, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are driving this increase. The positive trend is expected to continue with upcoming releases like Lee Cronin’s The Mummy and the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael. Later in the year, several highly anticipated films are slated for release, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, Disney’s live-action Moana remake, The Odyssey, Avengers: Doomsday, and Dune: Part III. Internationally, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the biggest Hollywood hit of the year so far, but the Chinese film Pegasus 3 is the highest-grossing movie overall, earning $645 million worldwide.

After a slow recovery since the start of the pandemic, it seems the film industry is finally starting to rebound this year, with more people heading back to movie theaters. While experts have been predicting this for a while – since 2023, at least – there’s a growing sense that this time, the prediction might actually come true.
