The Legend of Dragoon is a highly respected Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) created by Sony for the original PlayStation console.
Though it wasn’t as popular as other games from its time, it’s developed a dedicated fanbase, and people still ask Sony to make a sequel set in the world of Endiness.
Fans can now add Mark Cerny, the main designer of both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, to their ranks.
In an appearance on the My Perfect Console podcast, Mark Cerny shared his favorite games, and he highlighted The Legend of Dragoon as a standout choice, similar to the format of the show Desert Island Discs.
According to one developer, The Legend of Dragoon was created by a team with connections to both Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games. Shuhei Yoshida, who served as their producer for the Japanese release, also led the team that developed The Legend of Dragoon in Japan, and the developer was a big fan of the game.
Looking back at that game, it wasn’t perfect, but it had so much charm. It was a bit rough around the edges, honestly, but that’s part of what made it special. It felt like a hidden gem, you know?
According to Cerny, the game features a complex, interwoven story typical of Japanese role-playing games, and it was so large it required four discs. He points out that even seemingly unnecessary elements, like a lengthy dream sequence, still include a shop where players can make purchases – a necessity for it to work as a game.
During the game, a character can die, but it’s not a big deal. A new character takes their place, inheriting everything your previous character had, so you can keep playing seamlessly. It was a surprisingly good feature.
Mark Cerny was a massive fan of Legend of Dragoon – he even covered his office walls with its promotional materials for around ten years!
I was listening to an interview with Mark Cerny, and he and the host, Simon Parkin, were talking about whether they’d brought that old game back on current consoles – and they have! But honestly, Cerny said he’s not really eager to play it again. He thinks it probably couldn’t live up to his memories of how great it was, and I totally get that!
Look, I’m a huge fan, and it’s really heartwarming to hear that one of the key people at Sony still remembers The Legend of Dragoon so fondly. It’s easy to get caught up in what’s next, but it’s great he doesn’t forget the classics and clearly has a lot of affection for the game.
