Martha Stewart Reacts to Cate Blanchett Biopic Casting Rumors

Martha Stewart is sharing her thoughts on a biopic possibly being cooked up.

Just as news broke that Cate Blanchett will portray her in an upcoming film, the lifestyle expert playfully hinted at the casting, saying she’d been ‘hearing rumors’ about the movie.

Speaking with Variety on April 14th at the New York screening of Brunello: The Gracious Visionary, the filmmaker hinted that Cate Blanchett is involved in an upcoming project. She also revealed the biopic currently has the working title Good Thing.

I’ve been a fan for years, and the title immediately struck me as a brilliant nod to her most famous line – that wonderful, optimistic ‘It’s a good thing!’ It just perfectly captures her spirit, and I loved seeing it referenced.

Earlier that day, Varietyreported the movie was in the works with Zola director Janicza Bravo.

Martha Stewart is known for being very open about her life, and a new film is coming out that will showcase it. She already shared a lot about building her lifestyle brand and talk show in her 2024 documentary, simply titled Martha.

As someone who’s spent years helping people live their best lives, I always tell everyone I have two guiding principles. First, make a point of learning something new every day – it keeps your mind sharp and opens up possibilities. But even more importantly, I believe that the moment you stop growing and embracing change, you stop truly living. It’s as simple as that!

Her time in the public spotlight hasn’t been without challenges. In 2004, she spent five months in prison after being convicted of conspiracy, obstructing justice, and lying to federal investigators about confidential stock information.

Martha thought the moment shouldn’t have been included in the documentary, but director R.J. Cutler decided to keep it in.

In an October 2024 interview with the New York Times, Martha downplayed the significance of the whole ordeal. She said the trial and her less-than-two-year imprisonment felt like a brief pause in her 83-year life, even describing it as a kind of vacation. She also admitted the trial itself was incredibly dull.

She went on to say, “Even the judge dozed off! R.J. left that detail out completely. The judge actually fell asleep while sitting on the bench, and I recorded it in my diary every single day.”

When Martha Stewart, then known as Martha Kostyra, was 19 years old, she had her first intimate experience with her future husband, Andrew Stewart, who was studying law at Yale.

In the 2024 Netflix documentary Martha, the businesswoman described someone as “very aggressive,” adding, “and I liked it.”

Martha didn’t see her kiss with another man during her and Andrew’s European honeymoon right after their 1961 wedding as a serious problem, though it wasn’t a good sign for their future.

She described the kiss with the stranger – which happened at a Florence cathedral on Easter evening – as a spontaneous and passionate moment, not something wrong or disloyal. ‘It was just a feeling, something that happened in the moment,’ she explained. ‘It was thrilling, and I think everyone deserves to have an experience like that.’

In a documentary, Martha revealed she had a short-lived affair with an attractive Irish man while she was working as a stockbroker in the late 1960s.

She insisted she would never have caused a marriage to end. She described what happened as insignificant, comparing it to a fleeting kiss in a church.

She accused Andrew of cheating multiple times, even though he insisted he had been faithful until she admitted to being the one who cheated.

She clarified that she wasn’t the one being unfaithful. “He was the one running around with other people,” she explained. She added that she’s always considered herself a swan, and swans are known for being loyal to one partner.

When Martha Stewart had her daughter, Alexis, in 1965, she embraced the opportunity to develop her natural mothering skills.

She recalled in her memoir, Martha, that having children young was common at the time. It was simply what people did. She used to believe motherhood came naturally, but now realizes that isn’t necessarily true.

Martha shared with People magazine in 2020 that despite remaining close to Alexis, their relationship has always been challenging. She explained that she tried to include Alexis in everything, but Alexis left for boarding school as soon as she was able. Despite the difficulties, Martha emphasized a deep mutual love and willingness to help each other.

I’ll never forget when Martha Stewart went to prison. Back in 2004, she was found guilty of some serious charges – basically, conspiring with others, trying to block the investigation, and not being truthful with federal investigators. It all stemmed from an insider trading case, and she ended up serving five months at the Federal Prison Camp in Alderson, West Virginia. It was a really shocking time, and I followed the whole thing closely.

She once got in trouble for admiring a guard’s appearance and then touching the guard’s large key chain, briefly forgetting she was in prison, as she recounted in her memoir, Martha.

Honestly, it makes me so furious even thinking about it. Martha told me they just threw her into solitary – can you believe it? – for touching an officer! And then, get this, no food, no water, for a whole day! They called that place ‘Camp Cupcake’! It’s just… unbelievable. How could they treat her like that?

After getting out of prison in March 2005, Martha felt she needed to rebuild her life, and returning to daytime television seemed like a good way to start.

Although Martha Stewart has been a public figure for many years, both on and off screen – including hosting her show Martha for seven seasons – she has said that the experience felt more restrictive than her time in prison.

In a February 2024 episode of her podcast, Martha Stewart revealed she’s never had a facelift. However, she shared that her dermatologist, Dr. Daniel Belkin, has used Botox on her neck and jawline, and also administered filler to her cheeks and jawline.

Belkin also mentioned they’d performed skin tightening using ultrasound, and she remembered getting a Fraxel laser treatment on her body.

“I love how my chest and neckline look now,” Martha said to the doctor. “It’s thanks to your work and doing Pilates.” She also credited her glowing skin to a healthy lifestyle, including a daily green juice made with fresh ingredients from her own garden, and regular exercise.

Martha Stewart said she enjoys being around Snoop Dogg when he smokes marijuana, even though she doesn’t participate herself. She shared this during the first episode of her podcast in 2022 when Snoop Dogg was a guest.

She admitted it made her feel good and actually helped her focus. Contrary to what people might expect, she found it didn’t cause fatigue or disrupt her concentration – she thought it was fantastic and really beneficial.

Martha enjoys a well-made cocktail, but she’s always had a complicated relationship with one particular spirit, going all the way back to her days as a student at Barnard College.

She shared with Snoop Dogg at the 2024 Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival that she drank so much gin in college, she’s never touched it since.

She told her friend, who was finally releasing his own alcoholic drink after decades of planning, “I’m so excited to try your Gin & Juice!”

Incidentally, though Martha is practically synonymous with white wine, she is not a day drinker.

She told The Cut in 2017 that she never drinks alcohol before dinner, and wouldn’t be able to get anything done if she tried having a drink earlier in the day, like at lunchtime.

Martha prefers to wear her swimsuit instead of underwear, so she’s always ready for a quick swim.

The 2023 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover model recently told Page Six that she prefers wearing bathing suits as underwear. She explained she avoids restrictive or lacy underwear, opting instead to wear Eres swimsuits under her everyday clothes.

During a 2013 appearance on Watch What Happens Live!, Martha Stewart admitted to having a one-night stand when asked by Andy Cohen. She also revealed she’d sent flirty texts and playfully hinted at possibly having participated in a threesome.
