Both Sinners and Marty Supreme were major hits at the 2026 Golden Globes and are expected to be strong contenders at the upcoming Oscars. While seemingly very different—one is a horror film with a strong cultural backdrop set in the 1930s, and the other is a quirky, exaggerated story inspired by a real athlete—surprisingly, the films directed by Ryan Coogler and Joash Safdie nearly shared the same plot twist at the end.
Josh Safdie recently shared that he considered adding a surprising scene to his film Marty Supreme. The scene would have shown the main character unexpectedly encountering a vampire, and Safdie wanted a well-known celebrity to play the role.
The film Marty Supreme concludes with Marty (Timothée Chalamet) choosing love – his partner Rachel (Odessa A’zion) and their baby – over dreams of success and wealth. Interestingly, an earlier script had a very different ending: Marty would have been shown as an elderly man at an 80s concert, only to be attacked by his on-screen rival, Milton Rockwell (Kevin O’Leary), who was secretly a vampire. According to the director, this vampire scene wasn’t just a random idea – the crew actually built sets and made preparations to film it.
During an interview on the A24 podcast, Safdie explained that the final scene of the movie involved a close-up on the character’s face, followed by the reveal of ‘Mr. Wonderful’ biting his neck – a moment they specifically built with a prosthetic for the character Timmy.
The movie Marty Supreme would have taken a strange turn – it wouldn’t have been a supernatural or horror film at all. Instead, it would have been a story of revenge: Marty has an affair with the wife of a powerful businessman (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) and either steals from him or tries to cheat him.
Marty Supreme’s Alternate Ending Would’ve Been Sinners In Reverse
Ryan Coogler’s film, Sinners, captivated audiences with its historical vampire story, but the surprise at the end truly shocked viewers. (Spoiler alert!) Though the vampire threat appeared to be destroyed in the 1930s, musician Sammie “Preacherboy” Moore not only survived but went on to live a long and successful life, becoming a well-known blues artist who continued performing into the 1990s. However, he unexpectedly encounters evil again when he discovers his cousin, Elias “Stack” Moore (Michael B. Jordan), and Stack’s girlfriend, Mary (Hailee Steinfeld), are still alive—and vampires. Stack offers Sammie the chance to become a vampire himself, but Sammie declines, content with the full life he’s already lived. Stack and Mary then leave Sammie behind, heading into the new decade with confidence.
Originally, the story Marty Supreme was going to end with a surprise vampire killing the main character, a fitting punishment for their actions. However, the final scene of Sinners features a vampire offering immortality to a protagonist who has learned to value the life they already have.
