Marvel Actor Casts Doubt on Avengers: Doomsday Return (But We Want Them Back)

In a fascinating turn of events for Marvel fans, the upcoming movie “Avengers: Doomsday” is gathering several familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a showdown against Doctor Doom. This lineup includes Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, and Pedro from “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, as well as Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, and Hannah John-Kamen from “Thunderbolts*“. Remarkably, “Doomsday” is also welcoming back some iconic X-Men characters from the 2000s films, such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Alan Cumming. Interestingly, it appears that the cast members of James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, including Seth Green and even Howard the Duck, are not included in this lineup.

In relation to marketing his latest movie titled “The Floaters,” which features Aya Cash from “The Boys” and Jackie Tohn from “GLOW,” Green clarified that Howard the Duck will not be appearing in “Doomsday.” For now, we can only enjoy Green’s roles in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy and the animated series “What If…?.

What Did Green Have to Say About Doomsday?

Green made his latest appearances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during Season 3 of “What If…?”. The first was in the episode titled “What If Howard the Duck Got Hitched?”, followed by “What If The Watcher Disappeared?”. When asked about potential plans to reprise his live-action voice role, as heard in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, he responded “No, there’s nothing of any significance planned.

Green further discussed the significance of portraying Howard, stating, “Playing this character is something I truly cherish. It’s been one of my greatest honors. Trust me, there are so many aspects to it that I’ve been able to explore, and it means a lot to have done it in all those ways. It’s just amazing.

As for the topic of Howard appearing in “Doomsday”, I’ve got to be honest, I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one. In Green’s own words, “I’m quite certain I would have been informed earlier if that were the case. No one slipped me a script or briefed me on the subject…So, regretfully, I can’t see it happening.

It’s possible that Green and Howard the Duck might make an appearance again sometime in the future. You see, when we first encounter Howard in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s in the Collector’s museum. Interestingly, the actor who played The Collector, Benicio del Toro, has hinted at a possible return to the MCU, which could potentially mean a reappearance for Howard as well.

In the finale of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the team underwent a change following the departures of Star-Lord, Gamora, Nebula, Mantis, and Drax. The revamped squad now comprises Rocket as its head, accompanied by Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, Warlock’s pet Blurp, and a saved character named Phyla. It’s possible that Howard might be part of this team in a future Guardians of the Galaxy film, though it may be helmed by a director other than James Gunn.

It’s not out of the question that another “Guardians of the Galaxy” could be produced now that Gunn has moved on to develop the DCU. Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord, hinted at this possibility during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, saying “For those familiar with the Marvel world, we did ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’. There was a promise that Star-Lord would return. So all I can say is we will keep our word.” We’ll have to stay tuned to find out what happens next.
