Marvel Fans Think a Legend of Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy is About to Return After 19 Years

The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is Marvel Studios’ biggest project yet, bringing together heroes from across the multiverse. The film will feature multiple superhero teams – including the New Avengers, Sam Wilson’s Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men – as they unite to fight Doctor Doom. Notably, Steve Rogers will also return. However, it appears some familiar faces won’t be involved, as no actors from the Spider-Man films have been confirmed to appear. Despite this, some fans believe a key character from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy will make a comeback.

A social media account called No Context Tobey Maguire recently posted photos of Kirsten Dunst with red hair. Fans are now speculating that this could mean she’s returning to play Mary Jane Watson in a future Marvel film. You can see the photos below.

I just saw photos of Kirsten Dunst with red hair, and it totally got me thinking! Could this mean she’s going to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Avengers movies? It would be amazing to see her back!

Is Kirsten Dunst Returning as Mary Jane in the Avengers Movies?

Although it’s doubtful Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will be in Avengers: Doomsday—he was filming The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day last year—there’s been talk that Tobey Maguire might return as Spider-Man. While this isn’t confirmed, if Maguire does reprise his role as Peter Parker, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mary Jane appear as well. She likely wouldn’t have a major part, but she could show up in a scene showing a multiversal event happening in Peter Parker’s world. All the buzz surrounding Doomsday makes theories about Kirsten Dunst appearing seem reasonable, but there’s also a simpler explanation for the recent change in her hair color.

Kirsten Dunst recently dyed her hair red, and it might be for her new role in the upcoming Minecraft sequel. She’s been cast as Alex, a playable character in the Minecraft game known for her red hair. The movie is expected to start filming very soon, with Jason Momoa suggesting cameras would roll by the end of April. If everything is on schedule, filming will likely begin in the next few days, and the movie is currently slated for release in 2027.

Kirsten Dunst is expected to be quite occupied for the foreseeable future. Filming for the first Minecraft Movie took just a few months, from January to April 2024, and if the sequel, A Minecraft Sequel, follows a similar timeline, production could extend into July. She’s also signed on to The Housemaid’s Secret, a follow-up to the popular thriller The Housemaid, which is slated for release in 2027, meaning filming will begin later this year. These projects could make it difficult to schedule time with Marvel, should they want her to return for future films. Avengers: Secret Wars begins production this summer, and Dunst might be able to film a quick appearance between the two movies, but she may prefer to take some time off to rest before starting another project.

Although it doesn’t seem likely Kirsten Dunst will film anything new for Marvel soon, she may have filmed a role for Doomsday sometime in the last year. Marvel famously kept Chris Evans’ return a secret until the first Doomsday trailer, so there are probably still some surprises they haven’t revealed. It’s still unclear if Dunst is one of them. While it would be exciting to see her reprise her role as Mary Jane, a small cameo might not be very satisfying. Given that Doomsday and Secret Wars aren’t primarily about Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, it might be better to simply mention Mary Jane, similar to how she was referenced in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
