Marvel Finally Breaks a Three-Year Streak By Renewing Their Best TV Show in Years

When Marvel Studios started making TV shows, they often released them as limited series – big, self-contained stories with just one season. While a few shows like Loki got a second season and Daredevil: Born Again is filming a third, most Marvel TV shows, including Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, have only had one season. This has made fans hesitant to get invested in new shows, particularly if they end with unresolved storylines.

Marvel Studios is breaking its usual pattern by renewing its new series, Wonder Man, for a second season. The announcement came via a social media post showing a script with ‘Wonder Man Season 2’ on it, confirming the return of Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery. The eight-episode series, co-created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, premiered on Disney+ two months ago and will continue streaming there.

Marvel’s Wonder Man Renewed for Season 2

Marvel hasn’t consistently renewed its shows for more seasons. While WandaVision was popular enough to get a spinoff (Agatha All Along), many other series seemed designed to feed characters and storylines into the big-screen Marvel movies. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Ms. Marvel both helped set up the films Captain America: Brave New World and The Marvels. However, shows like Hawkeye, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk ended with unresolved storylines that Marvel hasn’t followed up on, leaving fans with unanswered questions.

It initially looked like the show Wonder Man might be cancelled, leaving the story of Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) unfinished – potentially moving to a movie instead. But now, Wonder Man has been officially renewed! This means we’ll find out what happens after the first season’s exciting cliffhanger, where Simon Williams showed off his incredible powers and he and Trevor Slattery were forced to go on the run from the Department of Damage Control. This renewal is the first for a Marvel Studios series since Loki’s second season was greenlit in 2023.

A major question surrounding the future of Wonder Man is when we’ll see more episodes. Production was initially halted by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and wasn’t finished until March 2024. Then, Disney asked Marvel to release fewer shows each year, pushing Wonder Man back another year – meaning it arrived almost two years after filming wrapped. Hopefully, the next set of episodes won’t face the same delays. However, one of the show’s creators is currently busy with a Spider-Man movie coming out this July. Also, if the new episodes arrive next year, they might need to address the events of Avengers: Doomsday. For Marvel fans, though, this is good news – not only is the show getting renewed, but a lack of consistency has been a problem for the Marvel brand, so a connected story would be a welcome change.
