Marvel Finally Revealed the MCU’s Only Chance to Fix Its Worst Hero

There’s a possibility that The Defenders could reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, giving Marvel a chance to redeem one of its least successful heroes. The Netflix shows featuring The Defenders were unique, offering more adult-themed content, but their quality varied greatly. While Daredevil was a hit with fans, not all the series were well-received, and Marvel now has an opportunity to address that weakness.

After the cancellation of the Defenders series in 2018, fans feared the street-level superhero team wouldn’t return. However, appearances of characters like Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk in projects such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye offered hope. Now, with Daredevil: Born Again, the Defenders universe is officially back, bringing with it familiar faces from the Netflix shows, including Jessica Jones, Bullseye, and the Punisher, among others.

Daredevil: Born Again Is Marvel’s Chance To Fix Finn Jones’ Iron Fist

The first season of Daredevil: Born Again focused solely on Daredevil, but the upcoming second season will feature Jessica Jones. As the star of her own show and a key member of the Defenders team, her return suggests Marvel might bring back other characters from the Defenders universe – like those from Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist – beyond just Daredevil’s storylines.

Recent set photos from the upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again show the return of Luke Cage (played by Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (played by Finn Jones), confirming that the Defenders are reuniting. This is huge news for fans, as it marks the first time the superhero team has been together since their 2017 miniseries, The Defenders. After nearly ten years of hoping, it’s great to finally see all four heroes teaming up again.

The return of these characters means the third season of Born Again needs to address the issues surrounding Iron Fist. The original Iron Fist series on Netflix received overwhelmingly negative reviews, especially compared to other shows in the Defenders universe. A major point of criticism focused on Finn Jones’ performance as Danny Rand, which many viewers didn’t enjoy. While his appearances in The Defenders and season 2 of Luke Cage were better received, his portrayal of Iron Fist remained controversial.

Bringing Danny Rand back suggests that Born Again needs to prove Finn Jones’ portrayal of the character is worth continuing. Marvel might simply want to maintain the consistency of the Defenders universe and doesn’t want to discard a character altogether. Alternatively, the show could actively work to improve Jones’ Iron Fist, potentially leading to a successful revival that finally does the character justice.

Iron Fist Is The Only Defender Who Can’t Get His Own Solo Revival (Without Being Fixed First)

Fans really loved the Daredevil series from the Defenders saga, so it made sense when Disney+ gave him another show. The same goes for Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, which were also great on Netflix – Disney+ could easily bring those shows back and create new, successful storylines with those characters. Many consider these versions of the heroes to be the best live-action portrayals, and some fans would be furious if the actors were replaced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Unfortunately, the Iron Fist series on Netflix didn’t fare well with critics. Because of its poor reception, it’s highly unlikely Disney+ would consider bringing it back for another season. While the second season was a slight improvement, the show is widely considered the weakest in the Defenders lineup, making a third season seem like a risky move.

For Finn Jones’ Iron Fist to get his own TV series, Marvel first needs to improve how the public views the character. The third season of Born Again might be trying to do just that. It’s unfortunate the character has a poor reputation, considering Iron Fist is usually a fan favorite. If Born Again can successfully make Danny Rand popular again, then a well-received Iron Fist solo show could finally become a reality.
