Be warned, this article reveals details from season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again! Marvel has recently clarified a couple of points about the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline. The next Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue the adventures of Tom Holland as Peter Parker. The last film, No Way Home, concluded with Peter asking Doctor Strange to cast a spell erasing everyone’s memory of him, hoping to protect the multiverse. Although he considered reminding his friends MJ and Ned who he was, he ultimately chose not to, prioritizing their safety.
The initial trailer for Brand New Day depicts Peter Parker balancing his life as Spider-Man, New York’s helpful hero, with the consequences of his past choices. We see him possibly trying to get back together with MJ, who seems to be dating someone else. Despite his efforts, crime continues in the city, and the trailer shows Spider-Man battling villains like Scorpion and a strange, unseen enemy who is manipulating people’s minds.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited to see some connections to the more grounded side of the MCU in the trailer. It looks like they’re tying in characters from the old Defenders shows, which is awesome! There’s a quick shot of Spider-Man getting absolutely run over by The Punisher’s van, and another where he’s battling The Hand – that villain group from the Netflix Daredevil series. And get this – the mayor giving Spidey the key to the city is Sheila Rivera, who used to work for Wilson Fisk back in Daredevil: Born Again! It’s cool to see how they’re weaving all these threads together.
The new season of Daredevil: Born Again finally explains how the show connects to previous Marvel series like Born Again and The Defenders. Specifically, it reveals why Wilson Fisk is no longer the mayor and what Daredevil has been up to.
Daredevil Isn’t In Spider-Man: Brand New Day Because He’s In Jail
The most surprising part of the season 2 finale of Born Again happened during Karen Page’s trial. While Fisk was giving testimony, Matt Murdock questioned him about the Northern Star – the ship that sank in the first episode and was being used by Fisk to smuggle weapons. With the other witness killed by Buck, Daredevil was the last one who could testify about the ship. To expose Fisk’s crimes, Matt revealed that he is Daredevil and offered to take the stand.
I was shocked when he finally confessed to being the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen – it led straight to his arrest! The season wrapped up with him behind bars, explaining why he’s missing from the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline. Honestly, knowing Matt, I don’t see him breaking out of jail, so it looks like Daredevil won’t be teaming up with Spider-Man to fight crime anytime soon.
The trailer shows Spider-Man battling The Hand inside a prison, which suggests they might have been attempting to kill Matt Murdock while he was incarcerated. Spider-Man likely intervened to stop them. Despite this, Charlie Cox isn’t anticipated to appear in the movie, meaning Daredevil may remain imprisoned until the third season of Daredevil: Born Again.
Wilson Fisk Resigned As Mayor Of New York City
When Wilson Fisk became mayor of New York City and started cracking down on vigilantes, it made people wonder what would happen to heroes like Spider-Man. The trailer for the Brand New Day storyline hinted that Fisk wouldn’t be mayor during that time, implying the Born Again season 2 finale would show him losing his position. And that’s exactly what happened in the show’s final episode.
It was unbelievable seeing Matt expose Fisk’s crimes during Karen’s trial. Then, the attorney general offered Fisk a way out – he could avoid prison if he just stepped down as mayor and left the city. Honestly, I was shocked he even considered it at first! He fought so violently with the protesters who stormed the courthouse, it was terrifying. But Matt, being the hero he is, finally got through to him. The season ended with Fisk leaving, and the last shot was of him on a beach somewhere – a pretty strange sight after everything he’d done, but a relief to see him gone.
It’s strange that Fisk isn’t facing any legal punishment for his crimes, especially the violence at the courthouse, but he has been forced into exile and appears to be completely alone. Thankfully, Sheila is working to repair the harm Fisk caused, and she’s begun by publicly recognizing heroes like Spider-Man once more. Although Peter Parker won’t be directly dealing with Fisk in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it’s unlikely New York City has truly seen the last of the Kingpin of Crime.
