Marvel May Have Just Confirmed Multiple Major X-Men Deaths for the 3rd Time in 9 Years

The X-Men are officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday, and a recent trailer hints at a potentially grim storyline. The new trailer gives us our first look at the X-Men, focusing on Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen), and Cyclops (James Marsden). This trailer also includes an action sequence showing Cyclops using his optic blasts while fighting the Sentinels.

Without any background on that intense Cyclops moment, it’s hard to say what’s happening. Given this is the X-Men, it could be a training exercise in the Danger Room, where Cyclops is letting out his feelings after a difficult event. However, the teaser strongly suggests a tragedy is unfolding. We see an older Magneto and Professor X discussing death, and Cyclops appears deeply upset while using his powers. All signs point to a dark and troubled future for the X-Men.

Every X-Men Timeline Looks Set to End in Tragedy

As a longtime X-Men fan, I have to say this whole ‘dark future’ thing isn’t exactly groundbreaking for the franchise. Ever since the classic “Days of Future Past” storyline back in 1981 – thanks to Claremont, Byrne, and Austin – the comics have loved exploring dystopian timelines. And the Fox movies definitely kept that going. Even Logan, which many consider one of the best X-Men films they made, showed us a bleak future where Professor X’s powers accidentally killed all his students. Now, Marvel Studios is joining the trend with Deadpool & Wolverine, which also presents a timeline where the X-Men are all gone. It’s a familiar trope, but one that clearly resonates with the character’s history.

The new movie Doomsday seems to be starting a grim new story arc, and it’s noticeable that only seven X-Men are currently confirmed to appear in the upcoming Avengers film.

  • Kelsey Grammer’s Beast
  • Channing Tatum’s Gambit
  • Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler
  • James Marsden’s Cyclops
  • Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique
  • Sir Ian McKellen’s Magneto
  • Patrick Stewart’s Professor X

Most fans expect Hugh Jackman to reprise his role as Wolverine, likely the version we’ll see in Deadpool & Wolverine. This could also mean Channing Tatum’s Gambit won’t be part of the main X-Men storyline. This leaves everyone wondering: what happened to the rest of the X-Men team?

Are the Other X-Men Actually Dead?

It’s unclear exactly which mutants were part of the X-Men in this version of events. However, the way Professor X and Magneto’s headquarters are designed strongly resembles the hopeful future briefly shown at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past – a future that might not have lasted. If this is that timeline, we might have expected to see characters like Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), Rogue (Anna Paquin), and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). The fact that these actors aren’t returning suggests something went wrong with the X-Men in this reality.

It seems Jean Grey is the most likely character to die, mainly because it would explain Cyclops’s strong emotional reaction. As an incredibly powerful mutant – or as the host of the Phoenix Force, depending on how Marvel decides to go – she’d naturally be a top target for villains like Doctor Doom and the Sentinels, since she’d be the biggest danger to the timeline. However, considering Jean Grey often dies and comes back to life in the comics, this death could be a setup for an unexpected twist.

It’s surprising to see Sentinels in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer. In Days of Future Past, the timeline where Sentinels existed was supposedly erased, meaning they shouldn’t have become a threat to the X-Men. This could suggest Cyclops is actually in a training simulation, or it might indicate events happening across multiple universes, with these Sentinels coming from a different reality. There’s been speculation for a while that Doctor Doom has been building his own Sentinel robots – something he’s done in the comics before – so this scene might show a timeline where Doom is currently causing destruction.

The current storyline, leading up to the Avengers: Secret Wars movie, is drawing inspiration from a popular 2015 comic book event. In that story, Jean Grey was deceased and Cyclops rose to become a powerful defender of the multiverse after obtaining a Phoenix egg. Marvel might be planning a similar arc, with Jean’s death paving the way for a significant role for Cyclops. However, details are scarce right now, and fans will likely need to wait for the official trailer to learn more about the X-Men’s involvement.
