Marvel Studios has a chance to clarify the place of the show Agents of SHIELD within the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the 2027 release of Avengers: Secret Wars. They’ve already started integrating older shows into the MCU by bringing back characters like Daredevil from the Netflix series. However, Agents of SHIELD‘s official status is still unclear, especially because later seasons don’t align with key MCU events like Thanos’ Snap.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told Variety at a recent event that the movie Avengers: Secret Wars, coming out December 17, 2027, will essentially be a fresh start for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The word ‘reboot’ can be unsettling. It often brings to mind drastic changes, like starting over completely or altering a story’s entire course – a fresh start with a single, unified timeline.
During a recent Q&A on The Cosmic Circus podcast, scooper Alex Perez discussed Kevin Feige’s statements about the MCU’s future. Perez believes this upcoming reset will give Marvel Studios a chance to move past storylines they want to revise. He estimates the new universe will be largely the same – around 75 to 80 percent of the original timeline – but will exclude events that both fans and Feige find problematic.
Marvel will be making some relatively small changes to the established timeline. They plan to revisit certain storylines and characters – bringing back some heroes and villains, and retconning a few events that haven’t resonated well with fans or Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige. However, the vast majority – around 75 to 80 percent – of the original timeline will remain intact.
Even though Marvel Studios has started using characters and storylines from its earlier Netflix shows like The Defenders, it largely ignores the seven seasons of Agents of SHIELD. For example, when the Darkhold appeared in WandaVision, it looked quite different than how it was portrayed in the Agents of SHIELD series.
After years of discussion about whether the show Agents of SHIELD happened in the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) or a slightly different one, a recent storyline essentially allows the show to be retconned or restarted, making its previous continuity less important.
Chloe Bennet, known for her role in Quake, recently discussed the status of Agents of SHIELD. She explained that the show isn’t officially considered part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline. However, a new development will provide an in-universe reason for why the show was discontinued.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really curious to see what else changes now that the MCU is basically getting a fresh start. We know the X-Men are finally joining the main story, which is awesome! But people are also wondering if we might see some of our favorite heroes who’ve passed away – like Iron Man and Black Widow – somehow come back, maybe with different actors playing them. It’s wild to think about!
Why Marvel Studios Needs to Erase Agents of SHIELD (But It’s Still Sad)

The TV show Agents of SHIELD introduced characters and storylines like Ghost Rider and the Inhumans that haven’t been seen in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Marvel begins its next chapter of films and shows, they might choose to revisit these ideas, offering their own take without being tied to the previous versions.
Rumors suggest Marvel Studios is planning a movie starring Ghost Rider, and many believe they’ll use the Johnny Blaze version of the character. This could create some story complications with the TV show Agents of SHIELD, because that show established Gabriel Luna’s Robbie Reyes as having received the Ghost Rider powers originally from Blaze.
It doesn’t look like Marvel will revisit the Inhumans storyline anytime soon, particularly after changing Kamala Khan’s origins. However, if they did decide to explore that world again in the future, they’d probably prefer to begin a completely new story rather than continuing from the old, cancelled TV series.
Though it might be best for the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline to move past Agents of SHIELD, it’s still a shame to lose characters like the Inhuman hero Daisy Johnson and the science team FitzSimmons, who quickly became fan favorites.
