Marvel Studios Is Officially Fixing Thor: Love and Thunder

Marvel Studios has announced they’re making changes to Thor: Love and Thunder, giving fans a chance to see an improved version of the movie. While it has some supporters, Thor: Love and Thunder wasn’t as well-received as other Marvel films when it came out in 2022, with many critics and viewers finding it one of the weaker entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios plans to improve Thor: Love and Thunder in 2026. Changes to the story and characters should create a more coherent and impactful film, and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is expected to recapture the traits that made him a fan favorite as the powerful God of Thunder.

As a huge Marvel fan, I was really intrigued by a quick shot in the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer. It showed Thor, looking like he did in Infinity War and still with Stormbreaker, just wandering alone in the woods. It wasn’t an action-packed moment, but honestly, a lot of us were saying it was the best we’ve seen Thor look since Endgame – some even think it’s his best look since Infinity War! It’s a small thing, but it really got people talking.

The 81-second trailer for Doomsday succeeded in making Thor feel relatable – something the entire Love and Thunder movie struggled with. Unlike previous portrayals that focused on his history or relied on humor, the trailer highlighted Thor’s vulnerability. This emotional connection stems from his relationship with his adopted daughter, Love, who is portrayed by Chris Hemsworth’s daughter, India Rose Hemsworth.

One of the best parts of Love and Thunder was the introduction of Love, the daughter of the film’s villain, Gorr the God Butcher. Gorr initially killed many gods, but before he died, he brought Love back to life and asked Thor to raise her.

Although that moment happened at the very end of the movie, it wasn’t enough to improve the overall experience. Still, the preview suggests that the character Love will have a significant part to play in Doomsday. Even if she doesn’t, it’s clear that Thor is primarily driven by his desire to return home to Love and provide her with the life he envisions. Understanding what motivates him will likely deepen fans’ connection to his story.

While Love and Thunder wasn’t a perfect movie, it now feels like an important step in Thor’s story. The Doomsday trailer shows that Love will continue to be a significant part of his journey, meaning the events of Love and Thunder were necessary to get him to where he is now, allowing us to look back on the film with a new understanding.

If Love and Thunder hadn’t happened, the version of Thor in Doomsday might not have been as emotionally complex. He could have remained a much lighter, less developed character, a shadow of his former self.

The movie Love and Thunder has significantly raised the stakes for Thor’s story. Because he’s been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for so long, many viewers might have been prepared to see him make a heroic sacrifice. However, the trailer now shows he has something personal to fight for, making his potential death even more impactful. If Thor were to die now, knowing he’d leave Love behind, fans would be heartbroken.

Without Love and Thunder, those stakes would not exist.

Jane’s Death is Also More Meaningful Thanks to Doomsday

The upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, aims to give Thor: Love and Thunder more weight and purpose within Thor’s overall story. It will also expand Jane’s role in the 2022 movie and give her death a more impactful meaning.

As a big Marvel fan, I was honestly a little disappointed with how Jane Foster’s story played out in Love and Thunder. Bringing Natalie Portman back felt so special, but it was really sad to see her character killed off, especially when it didn’t feel like it had the emotional weight it deserved, even with her ending up in Valhalla. It felt like the movie’s humor sometimes undermined the seriousness of her battle with cancer, and I think her death could have been a much more powerful moment for Thor and for all of us watching. It just didn’t quite hit as hard as it could have.

Okay, so after seeing the Doomsday teaser, I’m actually feeling a lot better about how they handled Jane’s death. It didn’t really hit me before, but now it’s clear Thor really loves and cherishes Love, and that makes sense. It wouldn’t shock me if losing Jane was a huge part of why he’s so protective of Love now – like he finally understands how important it is to hold onto the people he cares about.

Explaining this within the context of the Doomsday storyline would greatly improve how Jane’s death and appearance in Love and Thunder are perceived, and fans would probably be more accepting of the movie overall.

The Second Time a Thor Movie Has Been Fixed By an Avengers Film

The recent preview for the 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday suggests it will address many of the problems fans had with Love and Thunder, potentially improving how that earlier movie is viewed later on.

This isn’t the first time an Avengers movie has changed how we view a previous Thor film. For example, Avengers: Endgame led many fans to reconsider Thor: The Dark World in a new light.

Many scenes in Endgame take place while the events of Thor: The Dark World are happening. For example, when Thor and Rocket travel to Asgard, Thor gets a final visit with his mother and discovers he can still lift Mjolnir, proving he’s still worthy.

Before that particular scene, Thor was dealing with serious self-doubt and depression. Because the scene was so impactful and revisited elements of The Dark World, many fans ended up having a more positive view of that earlier film.
