Marvel Super Heroes Magic: The Gathering Preview

has featured Marvel characters before, notably in Secret Lairs and with a special set dedicated to Spider-Man. Given the sheer size of the Marvel universe, one set isn’t enough to cover it all, so this collaboration will continue in 2026 with a new expansion highlighting different groups of heroes.

Marvel Super Heroes Is (Mostly) About The Avengers

Although called Marvel Super Heroes, this set includes both heroes and villains. It’s not just an Avengers collection – the Commander Decks feature characters like the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom, plus a strong presence from Wakanda.

The Marvel Super Heroes set heavily features two creature types – Heroes and Villains – that often work well together, even if they’re on opposing sides. Heroes usually strengthen each other by using counters or granting special abilities. Villains, on the other hand, utilize Plans – a type of enchantment – to gradually add counters throughout the game. They also summon Villain tokens, which are 2/1 creatures with the Menace ability, acting as the typical henchmen seen with many villains.

A key feature of this set is the ability to transform, which makes sense given how many characters in this genre have hidden identities or temporarily gain powers – think of Bruce Banner becoming the Hulk. We’ve also introduced a new mechanic called “Power-Up,” letting creatures gain a temporary boost by spending mana, representing those moments when heroes and villains need to become stronger quickly.

Marvel Super Heroes Has Some Of The Best-Looking MTG Alt Arts To Date

I was really excited to see the Spider-Man set start using old comic book covers on cards – it’s awesome that artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko are now officially part of Magic: The Gathering history through those cards!

The Marvel Super Heroes set will offer a range of alternate versions of cards. One exciting addition is Borderless Saga cards, which use comic book artwork to show the progression of a spell, like the arrival of Galactus. Fans who open Collector Boosters may also find Borderless Classic Comic Cards – these look like authentic comic book covers, but still include the Magic: The Gathering card text, as demonstrated by the card featuring The Invincible Iron Man.

The set will also include special cards featuring artwork without borders, like the ‘Fight to the Death’ card which showcases art by Frank Miller. Additionally, ‘Marvel Super Heroes’ will have Logo Cards – unique designs for each major character, using their signature fonts whenever they appear.

Borderless Logo Cards display logos subtly within the artwork, similar to the Wolverine and Fierce Fighter cards. The Marvel Super Heroes set also introduces the largest Scene cards yet – cards designed to connect and create a single, larger image when placed side-by-side.

The Battle of Pelennor Fields was once considered the largest scene in trading card game history, but a recent Marvel Super Heroes scene has surpassed it, featuring a huge fight spread across eighteen cards.

Marvel Super Heroes Has The First Marvel Commander Decks

I was honestly shocked when the initial Spider-Man set didn’t include more team-up options – there were so many characters they could have used! But thankfully, Marvel is fixing that with these new Commander Decks. They’re releasing four awesome decks focusing on the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, Wakanda, and the Avengers, and I’m super excited about it!

The Fantastic Four is a deck built around the colors red, white, blue, and green, and any of its four members can serve as your Commander. Each member has a unique effect that triggers when you cast a spell that isn’t a creature, and they also have an ability you can activate by spending one mana of each color in the deck.

Doom Prevails is a powerful three-color deck – using blue, red, and black – built around iconic villains like Doctor Doom, Kang, and Loki. The deck’s strategy revolves around the ‘Connive’ ability, which lets you discard cards to gain advantages, making it stronger with each discard.

The Wakanda Forever deck is a unique White and Green strategy that centers around using artifacts – a less common focus for those colors. It also reintroduces the Monarch mechanic, giving the player who holds it an extra card each turn, but other players can steal the Monarch title by attacking them.

The Avengers Assemble deck is built around red, white, and blue Hero cards, and its strategy revolves around finding, playing, and strengthening those Heroes. Alongside the Commander Decks, Marvel Super Heroes will offer five Welcome Decks designed to introduce new players to the game. These Welcome Decks feature different heroes: Black Panther leads the white deck, Iron Man the blue, Black Widow the black, Spider-Man the red, and the Hulk the green. These beginner-friendly decks use simpler cards with plenty of helpful text to explain how they work.

Marvel Super Heroes Is Capturing The Feel Of The Comics

A major challenge with any Magic: The Gathering collaboration is ensuring it feels like a seamless fit within the game. The Final Fantasy set serves as a good example of how to do this.

Marvel Super Heroes successfully recreates the exciting world of superheroes and villains, but it stands apart from the Spider-Man games. The biggest missing piece is the X-Men team – except for Wolverine – which seems intentional, likely saving them for a future game of their own.

We still need to see more cards from the Marvel Super Heroes set – including the remaining Infinity Stones and details on the Commander Decks – before we can fully understand how it will play and how competitive it will be. However, the new gameplay mechanics seem really enjoyable, and some of the alternate artwork is stunning.

I’m so excited! It feels like it won’t be long before we, as Marvel fans, get to see how Marvel Super Heroes compares to other awesome team-ups like the ones in Final Fantasy. I’m really hoping it lives up to the hype!
