Marvel and USA Today are bringing back a classic way to enjoy comics! Spider-Man will appear in a new, digital comic called Spider-Man TODAY on USA Today’s PLAY platform. This isn’t your typical comic book – it’s designed to be read vertically on your phone, like scrolling through social media, and will be released in installments over 48 weeks. It’s a great starting point for anyone new to comics, features a fantastic creative team, and revives a beloved format from Marvel’s history.
An Old Format Reimagined For a Brand New Day

Starting today, June 16th, a new Spider-Man comic will be released every Wednesday for almost a year (48 weeks!). This isn’t your typical monthly comic – it’s a weekly adventure! The creative team is fantastic, bringing together writer Al Ewing (known for Venom and Mortal Thor) and artist Todd Nauck (Gwen Stacy, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man), both with a long history working on Spider-Man. These stories are designed to be lighthearted and enjoyable for readers of all ages, so you can jump right in without needing to know any previous storylines.
This comic will explore the entire Marvel Universe, kicking off with an appearance by the Hulk. Writer Al Ewing knows Marvel’s vast history inside and out, so fans can expect to see many beloved characters. It’s a perfect starting point for new readers, a welcome return for those who haven’t read comics in a while, and a thrilling experience for longtime fans. Spider-Man will continue to be the quick-witted, action-packed hero everyone loves, facing off against familiar villains in fresh and exciting ways.
This collaboration with USA Today is a fantastic throwback to the golden age of comics, when newspaper strips were incredibly popular and often valued more than individual comic books. Spider-Man actually had a long-running strip in newspapers for over 40 years, beginning in 1977 with Stan Lee and John Romita Sr., and it continued with its own unique storyline until 2019. While these strips were once a key way for fans to discover Spider-Man, they’d become less prominent over time. Now, this concept is being revived in a really exciting way, bringing it to a new audience.
According to Spider-Man editor Nick Loew, this partnership with USA Today marks a fresh take on the classic Spider-Man comic strip. Marvel hopes to revive the tradition of newspaper comics with this project. If it proves successful – and Marvel is actively promoting it – we might see other Marvel characters appearing in similar strips soon.
