Bryan Andrews, who directed and co-created *Marvel Zombies*, recently shared the reasons behind the decision to include both Eric Brooks (Blade) and Moon Knight in the animated series. He also explained how *Marvel Zombies* marked Blade’s first official appearance with credit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Bryan Andrews explains why Blade was combined with Moon Knight for Marvel Zombies
In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Bryan Andrews explained how Blade unexpectedly became the Fist of Khonshu in *Marvel Zombies*. He also revealed that the show unintentionally marked Blade’s first official appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Mahershala Ali briefly appeared as Blade, providing just his voice, in a short scene after the credits of the 2021 film *Eternals*. While a new *Blade* movie starring Ali was planned, it has been postponed and is no longer on Marvel’s schedule of upcoming releases.
During the interview, Andrews mentioned they initially expected the Blade film to be released before adding the character to their series, which created a scheduling issue.
He explained that sometimes the animation work happens at the same time as the live-action filming, which means they have to constantly adapt to what’s happening on set and make sure the animation matches. This can be really challenging, so they wanted to avoid those limitations.
They finally decided to merge the characters of Blade and Moon Knight, resulting in a new hero called Blade Knight. Since Moon Knight had already appeared in the 2022 Disney+ series starring Oscar Isaac, viewers who weren’t familiar with the comics already knew the character.
Andrews explained that introducing the Fist of Khonshu allowed them creative freedom. They didn’t have to be concerned with matching the direction of the live-action Marvel films and could instead develop their own unique stories and mythology within ‘Marvel Zombies.’ This was a key goal for Andrews and executive producer Brad Winderbaum.
Andrews explains that Blade Knight evolved over time, developing a unique personality and backstory that set it apart.
Todd Williams provides the voice for Eric Brooks, also known as Blade Knight, in the show. You can watch all four episodes of Marvel Zombies now on Disney+.
