Marvel’s Blade Concept Artist Says it Hasn’t Been Cancelled

Lots of games were revealed last weekend, but many noticed that Arkane Lyon’s Marvel’s Blade wasn’t among them, especially during the Xbox presentation. This led to rumors the project might have been cancelled. However, Jean-Luc Monnet, a lead concept artist and assistant art director, has now clarified that the game is still in development, dismissing those concerns.

After a social media user jokingly asked Arkane Studios if they were still working on projects, studio director Dinga Bakaba responded with a GIF from the TV show Breaking Bad. The GIF featured the character Walter White saying, “Let us cook,” implying that the studio was indeed busy creating something new.

Marvel announced its Blade movie back in December 2023, but hasn’t shared many updates since. They only confirmed at the time that development was just starting. Aside from a recent post by producer Kevin Feige, the only hint that the project is still moving forward came from co-creative and art director Sebastien Mitton, who shared some early concept art online.

Dana Nightingale, the campaign director for Marvel’s upcoming Blade movie, has had a LinkedIn profile showing work on the project since January 2022. While the studio publicly stated development began in 2023, this suggests the team spent more than a year planning before official production started.

Recent reports suggest Marvel’s Blade movie is currently projected to release in 2027. However, Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb clarified that this is just an internal estimate – the earliest date that the development team at Arkane Lyon thinks the film will be finished.

Arkane is a game development studio famous for creating immersive, player-driven experiences with unique gameplay. Though they’ve made beloved games like Arx Fatalis (2002) and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (2006), they gained wider acclaim with Dishonored in 2012. Since then, Arkane Lyon has continued to develop successful titles and expansions, including Dishonored: Death of the Outsider (2017) and Wolfenstein: Youngblood (2019), which they created in partnership with MachineGames.

Arkane Lyon’s most recent big project was Deathloop, released in 2021 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. In the game, players control Colt, who is trapped in a time loop on the island of Blackreef. Deathloop blends elements of roguelite games with a focus on experimentation, challenging players to find the best way to complete its levels and defeat eight key targets known as “Visionaries”.

I really loved the multiplayer in Deathloop! You could jump into other players’ games as Julianna, a rival assassin, and try to stop them from completing their loop. It was such a cool and unique way to mess with each other, and it added a ton of replayability!
