The Fate of Nickelodeon’s Biggest Show Was Just Officially Confirmed

Nickelodeon has consistently achieved success with both live-action and animated shows. The network’s NickToons lineup, including popular franchises like The Fairly OddParents, Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, have remained popular even after their original runs ended. However, one cartoon stands out as particularly successful, essentially carrying Nickelodeon to new heights. This incredibly popular series has now been renewed for more seasons, and its spin-off will also continue with a significant renewal.

Nickelodeon has renewed SpongeBob SquarePants for two more seasons, seasons eighteen and nineteen, totaling twenty-six half-hour episodes. Fans of Patrick Star have reason to celebrate too, as The Patrick Star Show will also return for seasons six and seven, also with twenty-six half-hour episodes. While we don’t have exact release dates yet, both shows are currently in production. Season eighteen of SpongeBob and season six of The Patrick Star Show are expected to premiere later this year, with additional seasons planned for 2027. With SpongeBob still incredibly popular after all these years, it looks like we’ll be visiting Bikini Bottom for a long time to come.

The Future of SpongeBob Squarepants: Rough Seas Ahead?

Even though SpongeBob SquarePants will continue with new episodes, a major business deal is creating uncertainty for the show’s future. Paramount and Skydance are trying to merge with Warner Bros Discovery, which would be a huge change in the entertainment industry. This merger could potentially mean that the Krusty Krab and other parts of the SpongeBob universe end up owned by a different company.

To get approval from European Union regulators for a potential merger, Paramount/Skydance might have to sell Nickelodeon and other animated content. According to a recent Bloomberg report by analyst Jennifer Rie, regulators are likely to closely examine how Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery overlap in providing children’s television channels. If their combined market share in any country exceeds 40%, it could raise concerns and potentially block the deal.

For years, SpongeBob SquarePants has been a popular show on Nickelodeon, and several SpongeBob movies have been released in theaters. Interestingly, new films have also appeared on Netflix, rather than Paramount+. So far, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie and Plankton: The Movie have been released on the streaming service, allowing some of the show’s supporting characters to take center stage. Considering these recent releases, it’s possible that Nickelodeon content could eventually become available on Netflix.
