X-Men fans have a lot to look forward to in the new year with three new comic series focusing on popular characters. While new series for Cyclops and Deadpool were already announced, many Betsy Braddock fans are particularly excited about Psylocke: Ninja. This five-issue series, launching in January, will delve into a previously untold story of Betsy’s past, showing how she became a skilled assassin and revealing her initial meeting with Elektra.
Fans already anticipating the new Psylocke: Ninja #1 have another reason to be excited! ComicBook is exclusively revealing a beautiful variant cover by artist Artgerm. This special cover will be available when the comic hits shelves on January 21st, alongside covers by Derrick Chew, Dike Ruan (a foil variant), Juan Frigeri, and Nogi San, completing the impressive cover lineup for this highly anticipated title.
Psylocke: Ninja As a “Spiritual Successor” to Rogue: The Savage Land

Written by Tim Seely and illustrated by Nico Leon, Psylocke: Ninja takes readers back to the time when Psylocke transformed into a highly skilled assassin. The story explores the cost of Betsy Braddock’s sacrifice to protect the X-Men, the reasons behind The Hand selecting her as a weapon, and its connection to Elektra, a former assassin of theirs. This book delves into a previously untold story from the X-Men’s history, building on themes from another series that explored similar territory, as previously hinted at by Seely.
According to writer Chris Seely, Psylocke: Ninja follows a similar approach to Rogue: The Savage Land by expanding on a well-known X-Men storyline and exploring new possibilities with the characters and plot. He was particularly drawn to Psylocke’s history of being forced to serve the Hand, noting that it connects well with Daredevil stories happening at the same time, and the series features striking artwork and costumes.
Psylocke: Ninja Is Set to Tell An Important Part of Her Story
The upcoming series will explore Psylocke’s past with the Hand, a storyline that connects to both Daredevil and Elektra. Fans remember Psylocke, or Betsy Braddock, being captured and brainwashed by the Hand, who transformed her into a deadly ninja. Although she was eventually rescued and rejoined the X-Men, this period of her life offers a compelling story. The series will feature a particularly challenging confrontation between Psylocke and Elektra, which artist Leon described as a lot of fun to illustrate.
He shared his lifelong fascination with ninjas, explaining, ‘I’ve always been drawn to the grace and power of their movements.’ Working on characters like Psylocke and Elektra, with their strong martial arts backgrounds, brings back fond childhood memories of play-fighting with a sword, and he finds drawing each scene incredibly enjoyable.
Psylocke: Ninja #1 goes on sale January 21st.
