As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can hardly contain my excitement! The Marvel Zombies are about to make their grand entrance earlier than anticipated, and it’s not just a bite – it’s a full-blown animation series! Following the postponement of “Eyes of Wakanda,” which was initially slated for Aug. 27 but then moved to Aug. 1, we now have news that the subsequent four-part Marvel Animation series has been brought forward even more. It seems like a recurring pattern with Marvel projects – they’re always shuffling around, with delays being as common as Spiderman swinging through New York City!
As a fan, I’m thrilled to share that, as reported by Collider, the Marvel Zombies episodes have accelerated their release schedule by nine days! Instead of premiering on October 3rd, they will now stream on Disney+ starting September 24th. This series is a four-part adaptation of the “What If… Zombies?!” episode from Marvel’s What If…? and the classic comic book saga that began in a 2005 issue of Ultimate Fantastic Four. Essentially, it’s like watching a movie split into four parts!
The director, Bryan Andrews, initially envisioned the project as a movie, expressing thoughts like “It would be great if we could release it as a movie.” However, some obstacles emerged and certain issues arose that necessitated a change in plans. Consequently, they decided to split the project into four separate episodes instead of releasing it as a single film.
Essentially, he clarified that this upcoming event consists of four interconnected episodes, akin to a film being divided into four segments, instead of an anthology series like “What If…?” which concluded after three seasons by the year 2024.
Andrews additionally worked on “What If… Zombies?”, an imaginative spin-off where Spider-Man (voiced by Hudson Thames), dressed in a cloak, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), and the disembodied head of Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) band together to survive a zombie apocalypse. This series cleverly blends elements from 2018’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Avengers: Infinity War”.
In this installment, characters such as Wanda Maximoff (the Scarlet Witch), Steve Rogers (Captain America), and Tony Stark (Iron Man) were turned into ravenous zombies. This transformation occurred when Hope van Dyne (Wasp) was infected with a quantum virus which subsequently evolved into a global pandemic, serving as the initial carrier of the worldwide zombie outbreak.
Contrary to the previous instance, the “Marvel Zombies” series will receive a TV-MA rating. As Kevin Feige, the producer and head of Marvel Studios, advocated for this project involving the undead, it seems to have been a success.
In Andrews’ words, once the reaction to the episode was seen, it seemed to solidify the decision for a Marvel Zombies spinoff series. Later on, following the release of What If…?, there was a consensus that rather than another zombie-themed episode in that series, it should stand alone as its own project, sparking ideas for what direction to take next. Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation, echoed this sentiment.
Confirmed for voice roles in an upcoming project are actors Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Awkwafina as Katy, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop/Hawkeye, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart. Hudson Thames will voice Peter Parker in this production.
Andrews mentioned in the show’s press notes that since it’s rated TV-MA, they don’t need to hold back. This means they can be more intense and graphic. They aim to go straight for the core of the subject matter – no literal throats intended. The show is quite bold and daring, pushing boundaries. Winderbaum added that animation provides a unique opportunity to bring a filmmaker’s creative vision to life. If you can imagine it, you can animate it. _Marvel Zombies_ demonstrates this perfectly. It’s not just a zombie tale; it’s a grand adventure, one that explores themes of hope and despair, which are key elements in any compelling zombie story.
Marvel Zombies premieres September 24 on Disney+.
